What can we learn from John 4:23,24?

    Von Christian

Some time ago I published a video: “Worship in spirit and truth” – What does that mean? One comment said that this was all well and good, but what does the text actually mean? In fact, in this video I explained more about what it can’t mean and then moved on to other texts. And now? What is the specific statement in John 4:24? If you want a quick answer from someone else instead of figuring it out for yourself, pop in a commentary!

    Biblical commentaries

I will quote three comments as examples:

The word “spirit” does not refer to the Holy Spirit, but to the human spirit. Jesus means here that the worship of a person must not simply correspond to external religious rituals or be limited to certain places, but must come from within (“in spirit”) with the right attitude of heart. The word “truth” refers to the worship of God in accordance with his revealed Word and focuses on the Word made flesh, which ultimately revealed the Father (14:6).

John MacArthuer, footnote to John 4:24 Schlachter 2000 (German)

And the conclusion that could be logically reached from this is that in John 4, Jesus was telling the woman that the arrangement for worshiping God must be based on a personal relationship with Him and on a study of God’s Word.

Commentary on John 4:24 in the 2001 Translation

In spirit and in truth.—The link between human nature and the divine is in the human spirit, which is the shrine of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). All true approach to God must therefore be in spirit. (Comp. Romans 1:9, and Ephesians 6:18.) Place, and time, and words, and postures, and sounds, and all things from without, are important only in so far as they aid in abstraction from the sensible world, and in elevation of the spirit within. The moment they distract they hinder true worship. Ritual cannot be discussed without risk of spiritual loss. The words “in truth,” already expressed in true worshippers, and repeated in the following verse, are more than “truly.” Sincerity is not a test of acceptable worship, though it is a requisite. Bigots sincerely think they do God’s service. Worship which is “in truth” is in harmony with the nature of the God whom we worship. To think of God in hearing His truth, to kindle the soul by hymns of praise, to realise the earlier portions of collects and prayers which utter His attributes, are necessary to the truth of the petitions, and thanksgivings, and adorations of worship. The model prayer of Christianity brings home to the heart the Fatherhood of God in its first words.

Ellicott’s Commentary for English Readers, John 4:23

If you are happy with any of these comments or other interpretations, then thank you for reading, listening or watching this far. But perhaps you are also wondering where these explanations come from. Well, let’s move on together.

We do this in the usual order: first the text in the original language, then the context of this verse, then the extended context in the New Testament, and then the historical context.

The text in the original language

Let’s start with the text itself:

But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

    John 4:23, 24 ESV

As a reminder, I also show the text again in an interlinear translation:

What do we recognize? In John 4:23, 24 there is no definite article. So it is not about ‚the‘ spirit or ‚the‘ truth.

What can we learn about the meaning from dictionaries?

    „Spirit“

At the beginning it says: “Spirit who is God” and the same word Πνεῦμα (pneuma) is used as in the part “Spirit and truth”. HELPS Word Studies says: „4151 pneúma – properly, spirit (Spirit), wind, or breath. The most frequent meaning (translation) of 4151 (pneúma) in the NT is „spirit“ („Spirit„). Only the context however determines which sense(s) is meant.“

If we were to look at all the uses of the word in the New Testament, the Septuagint and other ancient writings, we would end up with what we find in a good lexicon. So the term pneúma does not help us very much, because the meanings are very broad and varied.

That the ‚Holy Spirit‘ is meant can be ruled out, however, because Jesus says in verse 23 that the time has already begun in which the true worshippers worship God ‚in spirit and truth‘. However, the Holy Spirit was only poured out much later at Pentecost 33. And verse 24 begins with “the Spirit who is God”. Again pneúma. So either God is then the Holy Spirit or pneúma already has two different meanings in this verse.

So we cannot yet say what is meant by pneúma in this verse, except that the Holy Spirit is probably not an option.

    „Truth“

The Greek word rendered as ‚truth‘ ἀληθείᾳ (alētheia) means, according to Strong’s, “truth, but not merely truth as spoken; truth of idea, reality, sincerity, truth in the moral sphere, divine truth revealed to man, straightforwardness.” HELPS Word-studies says: „225 alḗtheia (from 227 /alēthḗs, „true to fact“) – properly, truth (true to fact), reality. [In ancient Greek culture, 225 (alḗtheia) was synonymous for „reality“ as the opposite of illusion, i.e. fact.]“

So this is not about ‚truth‘ in the sense of religious doctrines and dogmas.

If we were to look at all the uses of the word in the New Testament, the Septuagint and other ancient writings, we would come back to what we find in a good lexicon. But even this word has a rich meaning and on its own does not help us to understand the meaning of the verse.

So if the two words for “spirit” and “truth” do not help us, perhaps the third word “worship” will? Or the combination of these three?

    „Worship“

The text here says προσκυνεῖν (proskynein) and προσκυνοῦντας (proskynountas), which comes from the word προσκυνέω (proskuneó). According to Strong’s dictionary, the definition is: Definition: to do reverence to and Usage: go down on my knees to, do obeisance to, worship. HELPS Word-studies says:

4352 proskynéō (from 4314 /prós, „towards“ and kyneo, „to kiss“) – properly, to kiss the ground when prostrating before a superior; to worship, ready „to fall down/prostrate oneself to adore on one’s knees“ (DNTT); to „do obeisance“ (BAGD).

    HELPS Word-studies

In German, the word “Anbetung” (worship) might give us the wrong idea, because we might hear the word “beten” (prayer). But that is not its meaning in ancient Greek.

So now we have the connection of “spirit” and “truth” with the idea of “doing reverence” or prostrating oneself before a superior. Does that fit together? This brings us to the important context of the verse.

    The context of the verse

What is the context of this statement by Jesus? It was a specific question from a woman from Samaria:

The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.”

    John 4:19,20 ESV

So the question is about formal “worship”, i.e. προσκυνέω (proskuneó). And which of the two is correct. Let us remember the meaning of “truth” ἀληθείᾳ (alētheia): What is right, truth as opposed to illusion. And she asks where the right place of this formal worship is: Jerusalem or this mountain in Samaria. So a physical place in contrast to Πνεῦμα (pneuma).

If we realize what the question was about, we also understand the significance of Jesus‘ answer, because he tells her, to her surprise, that neither one nor the other would be right and true from this point on, but something else. But we can only clarify this when we look at the historical context.

The extended context in the New Testament

Is there any other text in the New Testament that also contains the idea of ‚worshipping in spirit and truth‘? No!

Even in the Gospel of John we find no further explanation of Jesus‘ statement on this. Only what we read in John 4:23,24. So if we don’t find a more detailed explanation from Jesus in the account, which he sometimes did with parables, then it’s not a given that we will find one, is it?

But now there are cross-references in many Bible translations. These did not exist in the original text, of course. This is why they should always be viewed with a certain amount of caution, because they refer to other Bible verses that could have something to do with the text we have just read – but are they all relevant texts? If we look at all the uses of a word, then we get a complete picture. I’ll list here the texts that are cited in various translations. Then you can make up your own mind: Philippians 3:3, Romans 7:6, John 17:17, 2 Samuel 7:28, Psalm 119:160, Ephesians 1:13, 6:17

But nowhere is our text John 4:23,24 quoted or commented on. So there is no direct reference in the New Testament. So this only helps us once we have understood the meaning. The texts then expand our interpretation.

So let’s move on to the historical context.

    The historical context

Why did the woman even ask this question? Didn’t Yahweh say in the Mosaic Law that he must be worshipped in the temple in Jerusalem? No!

But you shall seek the place that the LORD your God will choose out of all your tribes to put his name and make his habitation there. There you shall go, and there you shall bring your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, your tithes and the contribution that you present, your vow offerings, your freewill offerings, and the firstborn of your herd and of your flock.

    Deuteronomy 12:5,6

This is formulated very similarly in Deuteronomy 18:6, 26:2, 31:11 and other passages. Yahweh had the Ark of the Covenant, the “Tent of Meeting”, and sacrifices were offered there as part of worship. Only King David came up with the idea of building a house for Yahweh, which his son Solomon then built as a temple in Jerusalem. Yahweh accepted this: “Now when Solomon had finished the house of Yahweh and the house for the king, and all that he had set out to do had been done well, Yahweh appeared to him by night and said to him, ‘I have heard your prayer and accepted this house as a place of sacrifice.’” (2 Chronicles 7:12) But often it was not possible to worship there because of apostasy. Or because the Jews were in exile in Babylon and the temple was destroyed. Or because the second temple was desecrated (see the Maccabean revolt). And at the time of Jesus, the temple service was not in good shape either.

According to the Old Testament, after Solomon the kingdom was divided into the southern part around Judah and the remaining 10 tribes in the north. Naturally, the new king did not want his subjects to go to Jerusalem every year to worship Yahweh in the hostile kingdom. (1 Kings 12:25-30) Therefore, two new places of worship were first built in Bethel and Dan to replace the temple in Jerusaelm. Another of their sanctuaries was eventually on Mount Garizim, which was finally interpreted as the place actually desired by Yahweh (because of Deuteronomy 11 and 27 and Joshua 8). In addition, parts of the Pentateuch were changed and they saw themselves as the true worshippers of Yahweh and keepers of his sanctuary. And they also waited for the Messiah.

And what was right, true, reality and not an illusion? That was the woman’s question!

And that was the real context of Jesus‘ answer. Jesus was not speaking to the apostles, the disciples and certainly not to us! He was speaking very specifically to a Samaritan woman who asked Jesus a very specific question 2000 years ago. And that is exactly what Jesus answered. The fact that we can read this today is nice, but secondary.

And so the very next verse will no longer surprise us:

The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.” Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am he.”

    John 4:25, 26 ESV

Regardless of whether this Samaritan woman at the well of Sychar existed historically or not and whether they said it literally: This is very well put in John. Both religious groups had formal worship, with physical religious acts, in specific holy places, both were waiting for the Messiah and both assumed that their idea was not fantasy or imagination, but real and right – that is, truth.

And then Jesus comes and says: All these physical, formal forms of worship are in the past! It is about something ’spiritual‘. And the two opposing representations cannot both be equally true. But now the right, true form of worship is already being proclaimed and practised. And by the way: I am the Messiah for whom Jews and Samaritans alike are waiting!

It’s unbelievable what Jesus announces here in just a few sentences! Now we would like to hear what else he has to say. Please explain this to us further. But … ” At that moment, his disciples came back. …” (John 4:27) There are moments in life when you wish …

And I have also strayed a little from the historical context. But we still need to look at the historical context of the conversation and the writing of the Gospel.

How do we even know about this conversation? It’s not like the Sermon on the Mount, where thousands heard his words. It is a conversation between Jesus and the woman. When we read the report, it’s like reading a novel or watching a movie today, where we are observers – but there were no observers and no camera back then! So how would John have known this? We don’t know. Perhaps Jesus or the woman later told the apostles herself. What is important, however, is that this word is not part of the Sermon on the Mount and was therefore addressed to many, but to exactly one person. That is why it is so important to understand its background.

Jesus did not speak to us. The gospel was not written to us. We can be glad of what we have today. When was the Gospel of John probably written? According to tradition, John was written around 98 AD. So around 70 years – seven decades – after Jesus‘ ministry. And about 1/2 century after the other gospels and letters. But that is not yet the full historical context.

Even according to tradition, the Gospel of John was therefore written around 30 years after the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. So in addition to all the problems with worship in the temple, the second temple had now also been destroyed, the nation scattered and worship according to the Mosaic Law called into question. And as we know, for decades there were many who, as Jews, came to believe in Jesus as the Messiah, but still accepted the Mosaic Law as the decisive difference?

    Conclusion

It is also interesting that this event is only described in John 4. Not in the synoptic gospels. Not a trace of it. What did the disciples do in the 70 years before that? Did they only know about it from oral tradition?

Was this not important enough for the synoptic gospels? Well, what message does Jesus start with? “Repent, you must worship Yahweh in spirit and truth”?

In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

    Matthew 3:1,2 ESV

Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”

    Mark 1:14,15 ESV

Heal the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’

    Luke 10:9 Elberfelder

Perhaps we should reflect more on this message – the gospel – instead of trying to read something out of John 4:23,24 for ourselves or even read something into it. Especially as Jesus did not go into the subject in depth here.

What can we learn from John 4:23, 24? I propose this:

    • The text in John 4:23, 24 is Jesus‘ answer to a specific question from a certain woman 2000 years ago who addressed two specific ways of worshipping Yahweh.
    • The worship of Yahweh – now referred to as the Father – no longer consists of a formal system of sacrifices in certain places but is something spiritual. Just as the Father is not physically present in these places, but is a spirit.
    • This worship must not be based on fictitious human traditions, but on realities. That which is right and real from the Father’s point of view.
    • And by the way: the Messiah has come; it is I, Jesus. This gospel is the reality, the truth that must be part of worship.
  • „Worship in spirit and truth“ – what does that mean?

„Worship in spirit and truth“ – what does that mean?

    By Christian

How should you worship God? You probably already have some thoughts running through your head. Perhaps this too? We should worship God „in spirit and truth“. That’s what it says in John 4:23, 24, and perhaps you’ve already asked yourself what that’s supposed to mean. Let’s first read the text and then look at the context:

Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”

    John 4:23, 24 NIV

The context of John 4:23, 24 and the meaning in the Greek text

The context of this statement by Jesus according to the Gospel of John is clear from the context. A woman from Samaria had addressed him as follows:

“Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”

    John 4:19,20 NIV

In other words, she asks Jesus: As a prophet – someone who proclaims God’s messages – can you tell me which form of worship is the right one? It is not just about the place, but also the manner of worship. Jesus answers her as follows:

Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.

    John 4:21, 22 NIV

Jesus announces a fundamental change in relation to worship. And then come verses 23 and 24, so what is it about Jesus then speaking of „spirit and truth“?

First of all, we note that the original text does not contain a definite article:

He therefore does not speak of „the spirit and the truth“, even if it is occasionally translated in this way. Some translate it as „truthfulness“ (v23 Neue Evangelistische Übersetzung). If you read through the various translations and commentaries, you will quickly realise that these brief words leave quite a lot of room for interpretation.

    „Spirit“

Take Jehovah’s Witnesses, for example. In their New World Translation, the word explanations say:

Therefore, “worship with spirit” apparently refers to worship that is guided by God’s spirit, which would help an individual to be attuned to God’s thinking through study and application of His Word. So Jesus’ statement about worshipping God “with spirit” involves far more than being sincere and having a spirited, or enthusiastic, mental disposition about serving God.

New World Translation of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Word explanations John 4:23, 24

Did you notice the word „apparently“? That is always used when they have no biblical evidence for such a claim. And the last sentence „so it’s about much more than serving God sincerely“ was only inserted because the text can certainly be understood in this sense. We will come back to this in a moment.

So does „spirit“ here really mean the „Holy spirit“? Is the Holy Spirit supposed to guide us? Then let’s take another look at verse 24 in the Greek:

At the beginning it says: „Spirit who is God“ and the same word Πνεῦμα (pneuma) is used as in the part „Spirit and truth“. So if it were so simple that „Spirit“ in this verse meant the „Holy Spirit“, then this would be a nice ‚proof text‘ for the Trinity, at least for the fact that God is the Holy Spirit. The authors of Jehovah’s Witnesses have probably also realised this and therefore mentioned it accordingly in their word explanations. HELPS Word-studies summarises:

4151 pneúma – properly, spirit (Spirit), wind, or breath. The most frequent meaning (translation) of 4151 (pneúma) in the NT is „spirit“ („Spirit“). Only the context however determines which sense(s) is meant.

    HELPS Word-studies

If you consider the context of this statement by Jesus or the Gospel of John, then ’spirit‘ here stands in contrast to ‚this place or Jerusalem‘. And Jesus answers that no physical place is important for worship, but that this is a mental or spiritual thing.

In the text itself, however, there is even a direct indication that the Holy Spirit cannot be meant. Have you discovered it?

John 4:23 and the ‚guidance of the Holy Spirit‘

Let’s read the beginning of John 4:23 again carefully

Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.

    John 4:23 NIV

So Jesus says that at that moment it is already the case that „people worship in spirit“. But wait a minute. The ‚Holy Spirit‘ was only poured out much later at Pentecost 33 AD! So this text John 4:23 has nothing to do with the idea that the Holy Spirit was poured out on the disciples and that he guided the disciples to understand ‚the truth‘.

John 4:23,24 therefore says nothing about a connection between ‚holy spirit‘ and ‚truth‘ in the sense of ‚correct understanding of biblical truth‘, which one receives when one is guided by the holy spirit.

So isn’t it rather the case that „spirit“ here refers to the human spirit? A worship that is not associated with a place, a temple, with rituals, but refers to a spiritual level?

    „Truth“

And does „truth“ in John 4:23, 24 mean something like „correct doctrine, beliefs, dogmas“? Anyone who knows Jehovah’s Witnesses knows that the phrase „being in the truth“ was and is common there for decades. So it is not just about what is written in the Bible (even if the word explanation in the New World Translation of Jehovah’s Witnesses mentions this), but about precisely the teachings of Jehovah’s Witnesses. That only they recognise and „possess“ „the truth“. For example, in a recent article on the topic: Hold Fast to the Truth With Strong Conviction (German Are you convinced you have the truth?)

Jesus loved the truth, that is, the truth about God and His purposes. Jesus lived in harmony with that truth, and he made that truth known to others. (John 18:37) Jesus’ true followers also deeply loved the truth. (John 4:23, 24)

God’s people today do not claim to have perfect or complete knowledge of the truth.  … Jehovah reveals the truth gradually, and we must be willing to wait patiently for the light of truth to get brighter. (Prov. 4:18).

Watchtower 2021 October, p. 22, par. 11, 12, Hold Fast to the Truth With Strong Conviction (German Are you convinced you have the truth?)

There are many more quotes that show that ‚the truth‘ refers to the current teachings of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Is this really what Jesus meant? Let’s look at the meaning of the word ἀληθείᾳ (alētheia) in Greek :

Truth, but not merely truth as spoken; truth of idea, reality, sincerity, truth in the moral sphere, divine truth revealed to man, straightforwardness.

    Strong’s Greek 225

225 alḗtheia (from 227 /alēthḗs, „true to fact“) – properly, truth (true to fact), reality.

[In ancient Greek culture, 225 (alḗtheia) was synonymous for „reality“ as the opposite of illusion, i.e. fact.]

    HELPS Word-studies

Now you can look at the 109 usages of this word in the New Testament. Surprisingly, there are only 7 uses in the synoptic gospels. After that there are many more, namely 24 in the Gospel of John. Luke, for example, also uses it in this way: „But in truth, I tell you, :“ (Luke 4:25 ESV) In John 8:44,45, truth is contrasted with lies. And of course there are also texts in which truth means „divine truth revealed to man“, which is one of the possible meanings given in Strong’s Greek Lexicon.

So once again, things are much more complicated than we perhaps thought.

And so we also need to look at the extent to which the Holy Spirit should play a role in understanding the gospel. We can only look at a few aspects here, but that alone will be revealing.

    „The spirit of truth“

Let’s start with the words of Jesus according to the Gospel of John:

“I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

    John 16:12-15 NIV

We read here about the spirit of truth. The word Πνεῦμα (pneuma) is used for spirit. Exactly the word that was used for „God is a spirit“ and „in spirit and truth“ in John 4:23,24. However, the text is not that easy to understand, because the way Jesus speaks here of the Father and the Holy Spirit as a person is likely to irritate all those who doubt the doctrine of the Trinity. However, we had already noticed this in John 4:23 … but we are getting off the subject.

It is interesting that the part „he will guide you into all the truth“ is already quite freely translated. And there are also two different traditional formulations in the manuscripts!

But when he, the Spirit of truth, has come, he will guide you into all the truth; [other manuscripts: guide in all truth]; (Elberfelder)

But when the Helper comes, the Spirit of Truth, he will lead you to the full understanding of the truth [Literally: „he will guide you in the whole“ ( aL(2) „into the whole“ ) truth.]. (NGÜ)

But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you in all truth; [Other textual tradition: „…, he will lead you into the whole truth; …“] (Züricher)

    Johannes 16:13

So we cannot clearly decide here whether the Spirit will guide us to a full understanding of the truth, i.e. that we understand everything, or only guide us within the complete truth, i.e. there is no area that remains hidden to the Spirit. But we may not get all. If we look at the context in which Jesus says that everything belongs to him, there is a lot to be said in favour of the latter.

Let’s look at another verse on this topic.

    1 Corinthians 2:10-13

Does 1 Corinthians 2:10-13 explain the text from John 16:12-15?

For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God, which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words.

    1 Corinthians 2:10-13 NASB 1995

Here, too, we must first of all make it clear that when we read of ‚us‘ and ‚we‘, it is first of all referring to Paul, who wrote the letter, and those in the church in Corinth in the 1st century. The fact that this also applies to us today must be biblically proven!

Can we deduce from this text that we receive the truth explained to us by the Holy Spirit when we read the Bible? Paul begins with the idea that he came to the Corinthians to „make known the mystery of God“ (v1, NET). But the message he came with did not fit in with any of the teachings of the known religions or philosophies. He arrived with something that no one would have thought of on their own: „For I had decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.“ (V2 NET). Now Paul did not simply speak to them and then the Holy Spirit explained everything to them. He says after verse 4: „My word and my preaching were not based on the persuasion of human wisdom, but on the demonstration of God’s Spirit and power.“ And how did others learn about the mystery of God? „No, we preach the mystery of God’s hidden wisdom. That this has now been revealed to us was ordained by God before all time, so that we might share in his glory.“ (v7 NET) So when Paul speaks of it being ‚revealed to us now‘, it does not mean that it was revealed to everyone by the Holy Spirit when they read the Scriptures. For some, like Paul, it may have been, but for most it was revealed through Paul’s preaching. So verse 10 is not to be understood as the Holy Spirit revealing the mysteries directly to everyone. This mostly happened indirectly through the teachings of Jesus, the preaching of Paul, etc.

The fact that the matter is more complicated is shown in the very first verse of the next chapter: „But I have not yet been able to speak to you, brothers, as I would to spirit-filled people. I had to treat you like children who follow their own desires rather than Christ.“ (1 Corinthians 3:1 NEV). Were the Corinthians not led by the Holy Spirit? Were they not anointed? Or not anymore? Or is the idea wrong that one is either guided by the Holy Spirit and deciphers and recognises the truth or not? Is this even an all-or-nothing thing?

    1 John 2:27

Then we have 1 John 2:27. Perhaps you have already noticed how often we have ended up here with the Gospel according to John or John’s letters. It is strange that it is only emphasised so late in the scriptures and then only from one source. But that is another topic. So what does 1 John 2:27 say?

But Christ has blessed you with the Holy Spirit. Now the Spirit stays in you, and you don’t need any teachers. The Spirit is truthful and teaches you everything. So stay one in your heart with Christ, just as the Spirit has taught you to do.

1 John 2:27 Contemporary English Version

That’s what it says! „The Spirit teaches you everything“. Here too, of course, who is ‚you‘? Do you feel addressed? But the letter wasn’t addressed to you and me and others 2000 years later.

But the text contains another surprise. Many German translations render this verse is a similar war. But there is a footnote in the German translation Neue Evangelistische Übersetzung: „Literally: the anointing oil. See footnote to verse 20.“ And it says there:

Christ, the Holy One, has blessed you, and now all of you understand.

1 John 2:20 Contemporary English Version

Let’s compare with the German translation Neue Evangelistische Übersetzung:

But you have the Holy Spirit from the Holy One himself [Literally: the anointing oil or anointing. In the Old Testament, kings and priests were anointed at their appointment. This symbolism was intended to remind us that God had called them and equipped them for their mission. And through this anointing you know.

    1 John 2:20 NEÜ

So there is nothing here about the Holy Spirit but about the anointing oil or anointing! The word used is χρῖσμα (chrisma) and it occurs exactly 3 times in the Bible – in these two verses! So what does that mean? Did the Holy Spirit whisper it to them?

So I am not writing to you because you do not know the truth, but because you know it and know that no lie can come from the truth.

But you, hold on to the message that you have heard from the beginning! If you do this, you will remain united with the Son and the Father.

    1 John 2:21, 24 NEÜ

So they had heard the truth as a message from the beginning when they believed and were anointed. If they held on to their anointing and this message, then of course they would not need anyone to teach them anything else. They had already recognised the ‚truth‘ back then.

Therefore, most English Bibles translate 1 John 2:27 like this:

As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.

    1 John 2:27 NIV

But somehow the Holy Spirit must have done something in the first century, didn’t he?

Do not quench the Spirit. Do not treat prophecies with contempt, but test them all; hold on to what is good, reject every kind of evil.

    1 Thessalonians 5:19-23 NIV

Were not all the prophetic utterances in the assembly good? Or were they not from the Holy Spirit? It seems to me that the Holy Spirit and the understanding of the Bible is more complicated than it may have seemed at first.

We could analyse other texts on this topic – and possibly experience further surprises. But I think these important examples are enough for now.

To what extent can we know God’s truths?

To what extent did the Holy Spirit explain the „deep things“ in the first century? What does Paul have to say about writing this thought in 1 Corinthians?

    For we know in part and prophesy in part;

For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully, just as I also have been fully known. …

    1 Corinthians 13:9, 12 NASB

So we should not expect too much. Even the first followers of Jesus should be aware of their limitations.

But perhaps that should change over time. Yes, but in this way:

Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away with; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away with.

… but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away with.

For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully, just as I also have been fully known. But now faith, hope, and love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love. [Others translate: „What remains until the time comes“. Literally: „But what remains now“. NGÜ].

    1 Corinthians 13:8, 10, 13 NEÜ

St Paul says that in his day, despite the Holy Spirit and miraculous gifts, they only understood many things in fragments. And it would become less: „‚the gift of‘ knowledge will no longer exist“. That would change when the ‚whole‘ or ‚perfect‘ would be there. When would that be? And what would be until then? In verse 13, Paul emphasises what we can expect: Faith, hope and love.

If you believe that you are led by the Holy Spirit today, as mentioned in the 1st century scriptures, do you also accept that there are these other gifts of the Spirit? What else was there?

For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.

    1. Korinther 12:8-11 NASB

Is this still promised for our time? Or during the past 2000 years? That’s not what this text says. It only says that it was like that back then. And if you believe that today you are guided by the Holy Spirit when reading the Bible in order to recognise the truth, what about these other gifts? How do you justify on the basis of the New Testament that these are no longer made possible by the Holy Spirit?

It would also be good to read these statements in the context of chapters 12-14. In it, Paul shows that not everyone had these gifts. Not even the ‚gift of knowledge‘. Did they then have to ask others about it when they heard what was read from the Scriptures or the new letters? Interestingly, Paul has this to say in chapter 14: „Did the word of God go out from you? Or did it only come to you?“ (NEÜ). Even if the disciples in Corinth had the Holy Spirit, he had not revealed the truth about the gospel to them independently. And it was no different in the other churches. Paul had preached the gospel to them – it was not revealed to everyone by the Holy Spirit as they read it.

Perhaps you are now confused or see a contradiction: has the Holy Spirit now caused the holy secrets of God, the truth, to be fully recognised or not? If all this has already become too much for you, then I would like to say this:

Important, central truths or secrets of God are not necessarily complicated. The good news that God, through the Messiah and the kingdom, restores the state of creation that he desires, that the Messiah had to die, that the Messiah’s death was not a defeat, but that through his resurrection all enemies and even the worst, death, were eliminated, that was a secret. Saving the world through the suffering and death of the Messiah – no one had even imagined that. But we can understand this – even without knowledge of the original languages, extensive studies, etc.. Just like those to whom Jesus, Paul and others preached.

However, there are also a lot of topics, details and connections that can only be recognised through painstaking, time-consuming Bible study, study of the language and context, etc. And the Holy Spirit is not a shortcut for this.

However, the idea that you only need to ask for the Holy Spirit when reading the Bible in order to understand the mysteries of God runs into problems in a completely different way.

What do you read when you read the Bible?

Most people will read the text of the Bible in their native language, i.e. not in the Greek, Aramaic or Hebrew of antiquity. Between the original text and us, therefore, lies the translation and the different context (see my series The Canon of the New Testament). Does the Holy Spirit supernaturally help you to correctly understand the meaning in the original text when you read a translation in your language? Or do we take falsified or forged Bible texts such as the Comma Johanneum? Would the Holy Spirit prevent you from understanding these Bible texts as „deep things of God“ in your translation? I think everyone can answer that for themselves and the answer is: No.

But what about those who painstakingly tracked down, organised, compared and translated the manuscripts? Did they only pretend to be guided by the Holy Spirit? Could the Holy Spirit not have helped them? Are there really only ‚two classes of Christians‘, as some say? Those who are led by the Holy Spirit and all others who are not led by the Holy Spirit? That is actually a somewhat unfortunate choice of words. In the past, for example, Jehovah’s Witnesses have spoken of „the class of the faithful and discreet slave“, the „class of the anointed“ or the „class of the other sheep“. It only served to differentiate between ‚us‘ and ‚them‘. Can we lump all Christians of one denomination together – or one class? Both those who define and preach the doctrines and the ‚laity‘ who may think quite differently. Just because the Trinity is taught in a church – and we consider this to be a false doctrine? That would mean that there is no one in any of these churches in whom God’s Holy Spirit can work. Shouldn’t we think more carefully about whether the Holy Spirit of God can work in someone to a certain extent? Let us assume that the Bible translators of Christianity did not have the Holy Spirit and that he did not support them, then they nevertheless contributed a lot – actually even everything – to the basis of today’s Bibles and found a lot of ‚correct‘ teachings. So the Holy Spirit would not have played such a decisive role in understanding the Bible after all, as the translator’s difficult task could have been accomplished without him?

So is it the case that someone has or does not have God’s spirit? This is perhaps a wrong formulation, because it sounds like possession. But the Holy Spirit ‚belongs‘ to God (or Jesus, depending on the text). Does the Spirit of God work in someone completely or not at all? That was already not the case in the Old Testament accounts. The temporal perspective is not even taken into account. The Spirit could work for a while and then no longer work. Take Solomon, for example. He had received God’s spirit in a special way. And according to the Bible, there are reports about him and wisdom from him in the Bible. But according to 1 Kings 11:4, this is what happened: „As he grew older, they made him worship other gods. Then his heart was no longer undividedly devoted to Yahweh his God, as was the heart of his father David.“ (NEV). Idolatry – that was the worst thing you could do in God’s eyes. Did he still have ‚God’s spirit‘? Did he allow himself to be led by God’s spirit? To what extent? Did God’s spirit still work in him? The results from the time before were nevertheless included in the biblical canon. And what about David, Abraham, Moses, the judges and the prophets?

So can we judge whether someone was guided – and supported – by God’s Spirit when he researched and wrote about a particular biblical topic? And if he or she also believed in a ‚false teaching‘? None of us can claim that he or she has ‚the whole truth‘. But is there such a thing as false doctrine that prevents someone from writing or saying something that we would accept as ‚biblical truth‘? If we consider the doctrine of the Trinity to be false, can someone who believes in a variant of this doctrine not recognise any other ‚biblical truths‘? And can they not be guided by the Holy Spirit? Perhaps years of indoctrination still unconsciously influence how we think about it. The New Testament rather gives the impression that the disciples had the Holy Spirit and yet still had quite different and also ‚wrong‘ ideas.

    A word of caution

But how should we imagine it when someone says that they have God’s Spirit and reads the Bible? Something like this?

The Holy Spirit has helped us to understand previously unclear biblical truths. … Certainly it is not due to any human being that these „deep things of God“ can be discovered and explained. Paul wrote, „These things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in words taught by the Spirit“ (1 Cor. 2:13).

Does that sound right to you? It has also been formulated like this: „If we have God’s breath in us, his Holy Spirit, then we will understand the secret and hidden wisdom of God.“

Now let’s compare the above formulation with the following text. I have emphasised what is identical to the previous formulation:

Signs of the work of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit has helped the Governing Body to understand previously unclear biblical truths.Certainly it is not due to any human being that these „deep things of God“ can be discovered and explained. (Read 1 Corinthians 2:10.) The Governing Body feels as Paul did when he wrote, „These things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in words taught by the Spirit“ (1 Cor. 2:13). Can the rapid increase in spiritual understanding since 1919 after centuries of apostasy and spiritual darkness be due to anything other than the Holy Spirit?

Watchtower 2017, February, p. 26-27, par. 13 Wer führt Gottes Volk heute? ,German (Who leads God’s people today?)

Whether it is Jehovah’s Witnesses as in this quote or any other group, it is truly no surprise that for two thousand years Christians have claimed that they are guided by the Holy Spirit and therefore understand the Bible and the ‚holy secrets of God‘. The question is: can anyone prove this? However, we would not have to answer this question if we could no longer expect the Holy Spirit to guide us in this way.

Can we simply apply these texts to ourselves?

We have already addressed this point twice. Can we always apply the texts of the New Testament to ourselves? When ‚we‘ and ‚you‘ are mentioned, does that also mean you and me?

Even in the first century, many people claimed to be led by God’s Spirit:

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.

    1 John 4:1 ESV

Interestingly, we are asked to examine the source of the spirit. Belonging to a religion, church or group was not the criterion. Incidentally, in the next verse another criterion is given for recognising the work of the Holy Spirit:

By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,

    1 John 4:2 ESV

An extraordinary announcement that would lead us right into the discussions among the Christians of the first centuries. But not now.

So let’s take a look at some of the texts that talk about the support of the Holy Spirit.

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you [o. intercessor; o. helper; literally: the one called] and be with you forever [Greek: aeon] – the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you..

John 14:16,17 NIV with comments from Elberfelder

Apart from the fact that aeon does not mean eternity but age, the paráklētos, the ‚helper‘, is mentioned here. Is this the ‚holy spirit‘? It says here: ‚Spirit of truth‘. We should not jump to conclusions here. And who does Jesus mean by ‚you‘? The context shows that the apostles are meant. Can we simply extend this to all followers of Jesus?

I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.

    John 14:18, 19 NIV

Well, who has seen Jesus? You and me? No! The apostles he addressed in this passage. Many apply such texts to themselves without hesitation, but this should be biblically justified!

Just think back to 1 Corinthians 13:8, where Paul says that these special gifts will cease through the Holy Spirit. So before you tell yourself that you are guided by the Holy Spirit when reading the Bible, you should be able to prove from the Bible that this is still the case today! If you are now indignant in your conviction, then think about the millennia before Jesus Christ. Did the ‚Holy Spirit‘ help people to understand the ‚Bible‘ (what there was of it at all) in the way you assume? Think not only of an Abraham or Moses, but also of Hennoch or Job or those Israelites who tried their best? What if God and Jesus had not promised us that we would miraculously recognise ‚the truth‘ today through the Holy Spirit when reading the Bible? What if this had only been limited to the first century and a select few? What then?

    To you, He’s explained it, O man…
All the things that are righteous.
    And all that Yahweh requires
Is for you to be fair and love mercy,
And to be ready to walk with your God!

    Micah 6:8 2001 Translation

The real challenge for disciples of Jesus is not an exact understanding of the ’secrets of God‘, which we can only gain through the Holy Spirit. It is to think, be and do in our daily lives what God has always wanted us to do.

Bible study and the Holy Spirit

Understanding the Bible better and better is indeed hard work. Genuine Bible study is far more than just reading. So when Bible scholars painstakingly and carefully compare texts from the Old and New Testaments or carefully study the meaning of terms in antiquity, they often discover profound things of God that we have never noticed before. Nor do those who are convinced that they are guided by the Holy Spirit when reading the Bible. Considering the work of such scholars does not mean following the teachings of men. They help us to gain a more precise, deeper access to the text.

I think the late scholar Dr Michel S. Heiser made a very important connection in his book The Bible Unfiltered: Approaching Scripture on Its Own Terms, Dr Michel S. Heiser explained a very important connection:

One of my favorite scholarly quotations about the hard work of seriously engaging the biblical text—what we popularly call Bible study—is that of the renowned Greek lexicographer, Frederick W. Danker (the “D” in BDAG).1 Danker famously said that “scholars’ tasks are not for sissies.” He was right, and I’m grateful he was willing to say what needed to be said.

The truth about serious Bible study is that it isn’t easy. It takes sustained time and effort, often measured in days, weeks, and months, to really grasp what a passage means (or probably means) and why. If Bible study doesn’t seem like work to you, you aren’t really doing it.

All too often people who sincerely want the feeling of knowing Scripture aren’t willing to put in the time it takes to get there. Instead, they’ll take short cuts and then expect the Spirit to take up the slack. The assumption seems to be that the promise of the Spirit to guide us into truth means he’ll excuse a lack of effort and give us the answers we need. The third person of the Trinity isn’t the boy sitting next to you in high school that lets you cheat off his exam. Rather than substitute the Spirit for personal effort, ask the Spirit for insight to expose flawed thinking (your own and that of whomever you’re reading) when you’re engaged in Bible study. The more of God’s word you’ve devoted attention to, the more the Spirit has to work with.

Michael S. Heiser, The Bible Unfiltered: Approaching Scripture on Its Own Terms, Chapter 1
  • „Don’t miss any meeting!“

    „Don’t miss any meeting!“

    Von Christian

II can’t tell you how often I used to hear as a Jehovah’s Witness that I „must not miss a meeting“. As a former or active Jehovah’s Witness, I’m sure you can confirm that. I feel like I’ve heard and read this countless times. In the Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY, I have already found 40 results for the German text „miss a meeting“ and 125 results for the German „miss meetings“. Then Hebrews 10:24, 25 is usually quoted (usually only excerpts) and Proverbs 18:1.

And this pattern is not only found among Jehovah’s Witnesses. It is therefore a good idea for everyone to take a closer look at the methodology, arguments and biblical texts.

I remember, for example, how the term ’Teffpunkt’ (‚meeting place‘), which was commonly used in German congregations, was no longer to be used, but the official term ‚meeting for the preaching service‘. A circuit overseer also emphasised this. After all, attending this ‚meeting‘ was compulsory! And that was exactly the point: Not loving care but compulsory attendance at meetings and conventions. Always coupled with the advice that otherwise you would become selfish and fall away from the faith, which of course scares you.

You don’t believe that? Here are a few quotes:

Isolating ourselves instead of enjoying regular Christian fellowship at meetings can be damaging to us. It can lead to our ‘seeking our own selfish longings.’ (Prov. 18:1) So we are wise to ask ourselves, ‘Is it my custom to attend all the meetings and benefit from them?’—Heb. 10:24, 25.

Wachttower 2013 2/15 p. 23 Beware of the Intentions of the Heart

Peter showed genuine faith by gathering with his brothers despite his low spirits. When one is burdened by sadness or regret, isolation is tempting but dangerous. (Prov. 18:1) The wise course is to stay close to fellow believers and regain spiritual strength.—Heb. 10:24, 25.

    Imitate Their Faith p. 202 par. 20

True Christians are organized to support and encourage one another. A lone mountaineer can decide where he wants to climb, and he does not have to look after less experienced climbers. However, if he has an accident or gets into difficulty, he will be in serious danger, as there will be no one to assist him. Isolating oneself is truly unwise. (Proverbs 18:1) For Christians to carry out Jesus’ command, they must help and support one another. (Matthew 28:19, 20) The Christian congregation provides much-needed Biblical instruction, training, and encouragement for all to keep going and not to give up. Where would one go to be instructed in Jehovah’s ways if there were no organized Christian meetings for instruction and worship?—Hebrews 10:24, 25.

Wachttower 2011 6/1 p. 14-15 Does God Have an Organization?

The last quote from the 2011 Watchtower is particularly interesting. The article is about God having an organisation. Why Proverbs 18:1 and Hebrews 10:24, 25 are applied in this way becomes clear from the concluding paragraph:

Genuine love for God and love for Bible truth have drawn millions to an organization that meets these and other Biblical criteria. As an organized and unified body of people, Jehovah’s Witnesses worldwide endeavor to do God’s will. They are assured of his promise: “I shall reside among them and walk among them, and I shall be their God, and they will be my people.” (2 Corinthians 6:16) This wonderful blessing can be yours too if you worship Jehovah God with his organization.

Wachttower 2011 6/1 p. 15 Does God Have an Organization?

So it is always about the fact that there is only one organisation that is from God. The message is: ‚All the others are not of God. And so you have to go to these meetings because otherwise you are not where ‚God is‘. And where else are you going to get ’spiritual food‘? It’s not wise and even dangerous if you don’t go. Then you are isolating yourself and that will end badly for you. Because you will only follow your desires and reject wisdom.

And this has been emphasised again and again for decades:

How, then, can we individually build to greater maturity and become effective teachers? In addition to personal study of the Bible we need the rich association of fellow Christians at all congregational meetings.

To profit regularly from the latest revealed truths from the Temple, flowing down through Jehovah’s channel-like organization, be sure to attend these meetings.

Yes, for compelling reasons we should form the good habit of regular meeting attendance, if we have not already done so.

    Watchtower 1963 6/1 p. 336-337, par. 11

The intention is very clear: only those who can be indoctrinated several times a week in the meetings remain in line with the Watchtower organisation:

Do you ever feel spiritually weak? Examine yourself. Very likely you have not been going to meetings regularly. You lack association with your brothers. When one begins missing meetings one is withdrawing from Jehovah’s organization, and that is when one begins to become weak. He ceases to express himself or make a public declaration of his hope. In these last days of the Devil’s organization this is no time to take chances.

    Watchtower 1955 1/1 p. 19 p. 7

Is this loving care or is a threatening backdrop being created here for other reasons? The answer is not difficult.

But enough quotes from the Watchtower for now. Is it even true what the Watchtower keeps writing? Are these two Bible texts even applied correctly?

    Hebrews 10:24,25

In the context of the meetings, Hebrews 10:24, 25 is often introduced in a certain way:

In response to the Bible’s injunction [German Watchtower: biblical commandment] ‘not to forsake gathering together,’ the Witnesses came up with an ingenious solution—Nicaragua’s first floating Kingdom Hall!—Hebrews 10:25.

    Watchtower 2009 9/1 p. 26

Now please read the verses and the chapter and ask yourself whether this is a commandment like the 10 commandments or the two that Jesus emphasised. No, of course it is not a biblical commandment. And apart from Hebrews 10:25, no other text is quoted. I wonder why?

By the way: Have you noticed the often omitted second part of the verse? „and all the more so as you see the day drawing near.“ it says. What day? When was the letter to the Hebrews written? By the way, its author is unknown and not Paul (see my video The Canon of the New Testament – Part 17: The Writers of the New Testament). There are various interpretations of what is meant by the day. The letter was probably written in the years before the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. It is therefore worth thinking about whether the text was written for a specific time or is applicable to all times. In any case, it would be good to understand a text as a whole before applying it.

Incidentally, the Greek here stands for coming together, which only occurs exactly twice in the New Testament:

ἐπισυναγωγὴν (episynagōgēn) is also used in 2 Thessalonians 2:1

    We read:

Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered [ἐπισυναγωγῆς (episynagōgēs)] to him, we ask you, brothers and sisters, not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by the teaching allegedly from us—whether by a prophecy or by word of mouth or by letter—asserting that the day of the Lord has already come.

    2 Thessalonians 2:1,2 NIV

That’s interesting. The word is only used twice at all. In Hebrews 10:25, the reason for coming together is that they see the day approaching. And in 2 Thessalonians 2:1 the same word is used for the union with the Lord Jesus Christ at his return, with the warning in verse 2 that some claim that the day of the Lord is already here.

How should we understand Proverbs 18:1?

A few other quotes from the publications of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

We can regain the proper viewpoint by joining our brothers in worship instead of isolating ourselves (Ps 73:17; Pr 18:1; w20.12 19 ¶15-16)

Our Christian Life and Ministry—Meeting Workbook—2024, August 2024

Those three examples teach us another important lesson—we should not isolate ourselves from Jehovah and his people. (Prov. 18:1)

    Watchtower 2019, June p. 18, par. 16

But is Proverbs 18:1 really about attending meetings, whether of Jehovah’s Witnesses or any other groups and churches? We should not read anything into the Bible (eisegesis), but let the Bible speak for itself (exegesis).

However, this is not so easy with Proverbs 18:1, because the Hebrew text is short and quite obscure for us today. In fact, modern translators have always inserted words to make sense of the Hebrew. And since the King James Version, many have followed a rendering. This also suited all churches and is therefore still used.

Are there any ancient sources that can help us here? Yes, namely the Greek Septuagint and the Aramaic text. And what does the Septuagint and the Aramaic text say?

He who follows his desire separates himself, / he runs against all wisdom. (Einheitsübersetzung)

An unfriendly person pursues selfish ends and against all sound judgment starts quarrels. (NIV)

In his idleness one meditates on lust and mocks at good instruction. (Aramaic Bible in Plain English)

A man who wishes to separate from friends seeks excuses; but at all times he will be liable to reproach.(Brenton Septuagint Translation und andere Übersetzungen der Septuaginta)

Those making excuses are rejected by friends,And they’ll always be spoken of poorly. (2001 Translation, takes into account the Septuagint)

    Proverbs 18:1

The ancient translators were much closer to it and had a completely different understanding of Proverbs 18:1 than today’s translators of the Masoretic Hebrew text. You are probably as surprised as I am. But we wouldn’t have had to be if we had read all the texts compiled in Proverbs. Let’s read the first 4 in context:

Those who avoid other people think only of themselves and their own desires; they fiercely resist everything that is supposed to make them realise this.

A fool doesn’t even try to understand anything. He just wants to show everyone how clever he is.

Those who renounce God inevitably become guilty. But guilt brings shame and scorn.

A person’s words can be a source from which wisdom gushes forth constantly; inexhaustible and of profound truth.

    Proverbs 18:1-4 Hoffnung für alle

So Proverbs 18 is not at all about meetings and fellowship with a particular church, group or whatever.

The application of Proverbs 18:1 by Jehovah’s Witnesses and others now not only appears to be questionable. It is wrong. And yet it is precisely this text that is used again and again. And no other text – also interesting, isn’t it?

    And what did Jesus say?

Jesus also had something to say on the subject, but he is not quoted so often:

For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst

    Matthew 18:20 NASB

Incidentally, the text is only very rarely used in the Watchtower literature. Sometimes in connection with meetings with only a few people present. But I found this eisegesis surprising:

In context, this statement applies to Christian elders who are meeting to handle serious problems between individuals, but in principle, it also applies to our meetings. (Matthew 18:20)

    Watchtower 2006 11/1 p. 28-29, par. 5

Can’t we get together with other Christians?

Of course, it also becomes problematic when people start to differentiate between Christians on the basis of their denomination. For example, if you deny that God’s Holy Spirit can work in them. Jehovah’s Witnesses sound like this:

Further, you learn that this [Christ’s ransom sacrifice] is not an isolated action on your part but that you must faithfully and regularly assemble with God’s people, “not forsaking the gathering of ourselves together, as some have the custom, but encouraging one another, and all the more so as you behold the day [of the old world’s end] drawing near.” (Heb. 10:25, NW) Where can you assemble with such people to study such things? Certainly not in the majority of church organizations today where people have been members for forty or fifty years and still are unable to explain the elementary doctrines of Christianity. But you do meet people who can give you such encouragement, and you really do study God’s Word when you attend the regular meetings at the more than 14,000 Kingdom Halls of Jehovah’s witnesses throughout the world.

    Watchtower 1955 7/15 p. 423-424

    Conclusion

If you once again hear the argument that you must obey the command in Hebrews 10:24,25 to attend the meetings because otherwise you are separating yourself according to Proverbs 18:1 just to follow your own desires and rejecting all wisdom, then remember our analysis of these Bible passages.

  • Metamorphosis: How a ‚council of apostles and older men‘ became the channel of God

Metamorphosis: How a ‚council of apostles and older men‘ became the channel of God

    Von Christian

When I was a small child, if I had asked my grandparents who was in the Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses, they would probably have looked at me in some amazement. But this is only hypothetical, because at that time the term ‚Governing Body‘ was hardly used.

In fact, in the book Life everlasting in freedom of the sons of god (published by Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1966), for example, you could read on page 34 in the table:

Tabelle 2/2 Ewiges Leben in der Freiheit der Söhne Gottes
Tabelle 2/2 Ewiges Leben in der Freiheit der Söhne Gottes

    c. 49 AD Jerusalem council of apostles and older men decrees against blood and things strangled

Life everlasting in freedom of the sons of god, 1966, p. 34

From time to time, however, the term has been used before in Jehovah’s Witness publications, for example, in the 1960 Watchtower:

18 … When the matter of circumcision arose, Paul did not summon to a synod the congregation overseers of Antioch and the rest of the province of Syria for the purpose of discussing and deciding on the matter, neither did he expect the spirit of God to give direct guidance to the congregations, but he went to the visible governing body at Jerusalem; and after the matter was settled there under the guidance of the spirit on that body, he was sent back to the congregations to make known the decision to them. …

    (a) Did the spirit guide the local congregations direct in the early church? (b) Why might one think complications could arise over decisions made by the visible governing body at Jerusalem, and did they arise?

w60 8/1. p. 470 The Unity of the Christian Church

As stated, the term was rarely used in reference to the leadership of the Jehovah’s Witness organization. Example:

This “slave” class has a governing body rendering counsel and direction as prefigured by Elihu when he gave counsel to ancient Job. (Job 32:1-6)

w60 7/15 p. 438 par. 1 Staying Awake with the “Faithful and Discreet Slave”

Who or what this is remained unexplained in the Watchtower, because this „governing body“ is mentioned only once in this sentence in this article. With the index of publications everyone can check for himself that before 1971 this term was used very rarely for the first century as well as for the modern times:

When then did it really start with the modern Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses? In the above screenshot we see the itme ‚beginning‘, w71 760-761. Some excerpts from it:

ON Friday morning, October 1, 1971, the legal corporation known as Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania held its annual corporation meeting, this time in the Assembly Hall of Jehovah’s witnesses at Buckingham, Pennsylvania. …
At this meeting a question came up and was discussed from the platform. It was as to what the relationship is between the Board of Directors of the Society as a legal corporation and the Governing Body of Jehovah’s Christian witnesses. Are they the same, identical, or are they different? Such questions were due to the fact that it has been published in print that the Governing Body of Jehovah’s witnesses at headquarters is associated with the Board of Directors of the said Society. …
How did this governing body make its appearance in recent times? Evidently under the direction of Jehovah God and his Son Jesus Christ. According to the facts available, the governing body became associated with the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania. C. T. Russell was patently of that governing body back there in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. …
The governing body has the strictly spiritual field for its operation. The legal nonprofit corporation, the Society, has many additional duties as an administrative agency of Jehovah’s witnesses. The governing body is very grateful to God for the religious Society that is to be used as an agency of Jehovah’s Christian witnesses. …
Nineteen hundred years ago, the “faithful and discreet slave” class with its governing body functioned without a legal corporation chartered by Caesar, and it did so—successfully, magnificently. What about the governing body of the “faithful and discreet slave” class of the present time?d Can it also function without the legal nonprofit corporation known as Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania? and succeed? In the light of the precedent established by the apostles and fellow elders of the Jerusalem congregation in the first century C.E., we leave you to answer the question for yourself.

    w71 12/15 p. 751ff A Governing Body as Different from a Legal Corporation

In this article, the term ‚governing body‘ appears a whopping 70 times and ‚body‘ or ‚corporation‘ 100 times! So, in this article, an attempt was made to establish a connection between a ‚governing body‘ in the first century, the ‚faithful and discreet slave‘ from Jesus‘ parable and the leadership of the organization and the legally registered corporations. It is intriguing that in the Watchtower of 1971, among other things, this was asserted:

    • C.T. Russel was ‚obviously‘ part of the Governing Body.
    • Already in the 1st century the „class of the faithful and discreet slave“ existed.
    • „1,900 years ago, the „faithful and discreet slave“ class operated in conjunction with their governing body.“
    • „governing body of the class of the „faithful and discreet slave“ in modern times“
    • „The governing body has the strictly spiritual field for its operation.“

Quiz question: Which of these statements still apply today?

Quiz question 2: From when was the phrase „the class of the faithful and discreet slave“ no longer used and only „the faithful and discreet slave“ was written?

Subsequently, tensions arose between the president N. H. Knorr and the vice-president F. W. Franz and the new ‚Governing Body‘. The details have already been explained in various books. We now focus on the changed representation in the publications.

As late as 1971, the Governing Body was still described thus:

Today the organization that God has raised up for preaching the good news of the Kingdom also has a governing body. It represents the “faithful and discreet slave” class of anointed Christians that Jesus spoke about in an illustration at Matthew 24:45 to 47. These fulfill their responsibility to provide spiritual food “at the proper time,” doing so through the governing body. This governing body is closely associated with the board of anointed directors of the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania.

    w71 2/1 p. 81 par. 26 Proclaiming Good News World Wide

Let us note: The ‚faithful and discreet slave‘ is a ‚class of anointed Christians‘ who fulfill their responsibilities through the ‚Governing Body‘. And this is closely associated with the board of the Watch Tower Bible and Trace Society of Pennsylvania.

Even in 1985, the Watchtower said:

In modern times, the Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses, representing the Master’s “faithful and discreet slave” on earth, follows the same apostolic pattern. (Matthew 24:45-47).

w85 1/1. p.11 par. 8 Unified In Publishing the Word of Jehovah

What role should the Governing Body have in the life of the publishers? Let us see what was said 5 years later:

16 The earthly belongings of the King Jesus Christ have continually grown. … This growth has called for the expansion of facilities at the Society’s headquarters and in its branches, as well as for the modernizing of methods of production and distribution. It has resulted in the building of many Kingdom Halls and Assembly Halls throughout the earth. All the while, the Governing Body has also continued to carry the responsibility of overseeing the preaching work, producing Bible study material, and appointing overseers in the branches, districts, circuits, and congregations. These are the Kingdom interests that Christ has committed to the care of the faithful and discreet slave, represented by its Governing Body.
18 … One way we reflect our cooperation with the Governing Body is by remembering these specially appointed ones in our daily prayers.—Romans 12:12.
19 How do the instructions and decisions of the Governing Body reach the congregations? …

w90 3/15. p. 19 Cooperating With the Governing Body Today

Everything – even material things – are part of the earthly possessions that were handed over to the Governing Body. This sounded different in 1972. Everyone should even pray for them daily. This is a central role in the life of every publisher, isn’t it? And everyone has to abide by their instructions and decisions through the organization of branches and overseers.

This was also emphasized in the Watchtower 2008, for example. It is interesting to analyze the way of argumentation here:

13 In accepting Jehovah’s authority, we need to guard against an independent spirit. A haughty attitude can cause us to feel that we do not need guidance from anyone. For example, we might resist counsel given by those taking the lead among God’s people. God has established an arrangement by which a faithful and discreet slave class provides spiritual food at the proper time. (Matt. 24:45-47) We should humbly recognize that this is the way Jehovah is caring for his people today. Be like the faithful apostles. When some disciples were stumbled, Jesus asked the apostles: “You do not want to go also, do you?” Peter replied: “Lord, whom shall we go away to? You have sayings of everlasting life.”—John 6:66-68.

    w08 6/15 p.21 par. 13 Accept Jehovah’s Authority

The argument begins with recognizing Jehovah’s authority. This is linked to spirit of independence and then a ‚haughty attitude‘ in not ’needing guidance from anyone‘. So from supreme authority, to refusal of guidance from anyone. This is turned into counsel in the next sentence. From leadership: that is, the Governing Body and its organization, without naming it. About the class (Note: Still slave class …) of the slave and ‚food at the proper time‘ in Matthew 24, it is then reasoned that this is what God intended. Once apart from the fact that no class is mentioned in Matthew 24, it is a parable. But now comes the surprise. The apostles are given as a good example when other disciples ‚were stumbled‘. What then was the reason? Was it Jesus‘ advice or guidance? No. It was Jesus‘ formulation to eat his flesh and blood. And to whom did they go then? To Jesus himself. And we can still do the same today by reading the Bible: Go to Jesus. Altogether again a beautiful example, how by refined rhetoric and misleading argumentation methods an obedience is demanded, which cannot be justified directly with the Bible.

What role does the Governing Body still play? What does it call itself today, even though the term was sometimes used in the 1950s?

From these words it is clear that, as a group, the anointed footstep followers of Jesus make up this “royal priesthood,” which Peter also called “a holy nation.” They constitute the channel that Jehovah uses to provide his people with instruction and spiritual direction.—Matthew 24:45-47.

    w02 8/1 p. 13 par. 17 Loyally Submit to Godly Authority

We, then, must avoid the snare of jealously trying to protect our own cherished ideas or ways that are not solidly based on God’s Word. We do well to accept the fresh light shed on the Word of God through the channel that Jehovah is using today.

    w02 10/15 p.30

Therefore, they are also inserted in the Watchtower April 2013 at this point in the picture:

In 2013 there was an even more remarkable change in the ‚understanding of the Bible‘, ’new light‘ that is:

“The faithful and discreet slave”: A small group of anointed brothers who are directly involved in preparing and dispensing spiritual food during Christ’s presence. Today, these anointed brothers make up the Governing Body.

w13 7/15 p. 25 “Who Really Is the Faithful and Discreet Slave?” Upper case ‚Governing Body‘ as in the Watchtower

So there was no longer a class of the „faithful and discreet slave“ who formed a body, but the Governing Body (written in upper case in the 2013 Watchtower article) was itself this slave – and therefore the addition ‚class‘ falls away. Would hardly be appropriate, after all, with only a few men. Significantly, in the same Watchtower not only was it announced that it had been expanded with Mark Sanderson, but also a picture of the Governing Body was printed.

    w13 7/15 p. 26

Which role do the other ‚anointed brothers‘, which are not part of the Governing Body, have on earth? The same as the publishers of the ‚other sheep‘ class. The must wait until they will be in heaven, according to the picture in the same Watchtower article:

„All of the 144,000 will share Jesus’ vast heavenly authority (See paragraph 19)“ w13 7/15 p. 25 “Who Really Is the Faithful and Discreet Slave?”

Nur vier Monate später zeigte sich, welchen Anspruch diese Leitende Körperschaft nun hatte:

At that time, the life-saving direction that we receive from Jehovah’s organization may not appear practical from a human standpoint. All of us must be ready to obey any instructions we may receive, whether these appear sound from a strategic or human standpoint or not.

w13 11/15 p. 20 par. 17 Seven Shepherds, Eight Dukes—What They Mean for Us Today

In 2017, there were a few more interesting notes regarding the Governing Body under the significant theme: Who leads God’s people today?

10 In 1919, three years after Brother Russell’s death, Jesus appointed “the faithful and discreet slave.” For what purpose? To give his domestics “food at the proper time.” (Matt. 24:45) Even in those early years, a small group of anointed brothers who served at headquarters in Brooklyn, New York, prepared and distributed spiritual food to Jesus’ followers. The expression “governing body” began appearing in our publications in the 1940’s, when it was understood to be closely connected with the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society. …
The July 15, 2013, issue of The Watchtower explained that “the faithful and discreet slave” is a small group of anointed brothers who make up the Governing Body.
13 Evidence of holy spirit. The holy spirit has helped the Governing Body to grasp Scriptural truths not previously understood. For example, reflect on the list of beliefs clarified that was referred to in the preceding paragraph. Surely, no human deserves credit for discovering and explaining these “deep things of God”! (Read 1 Corinthians 2:10.) The Governing Body echoes the apostle Paul, who wrote: “These things we also speak, not with words taught by human wisdom, but with those taught by the spirit.” (1 Cor. 2:13). …
14 Evidence of angelic assistance. The Governing Body today has the colossal task of overseeing an international preaching work involving over eight million evangelizers. Why has that work been so successful? For one, angels are involved. (Read Revelation 14:6, 7.) …
16 Read Hebrews 13:7. The word rendered “remember” can also be translated “mention.” Therefore, one way you can “remember those who are taking the lead” is by mentioning the Governing Body in your prayers. (Eph. 6:18). …
17 Of course, remembering the Governing Body involves not just words but also cooperation with its direction. The Governing Body provides the direction given in our publications and at our meetings, assemblies, and conventions. In addition, it appoints circuit overseers, who in turn appoint congregation elders. Circuit overseers and elders remember the Governing Body by sticking closely to guidelines given to them. All of us show respect for our Leader, Jesus, by being obedient and submissive to the men he is using to direct us.—Heb. 13:17.

w17 February p. 23-28 Who Is Leading God’s People Today? (Italics in the publication)

    Let us summarize:

    • Russel was no longer ‚obviously‚ part of the „faithful and discreet slave“ who worked 1900 years ago, as it was still doctrine in 1971.
    • The „faithful and discreet“ slave no longer works through the Governing Body. It is the slave.
    • The Holy Spirit helps the Governing Body with their teachings. Even though, as a precaution, the preceding paragraph says that they are not infallible and even publish list with ’new light‘.
    • Angels help the Governing Body. This is said in relation to the preaching work, but in the context of the leadership of the Governing Body.
    • One should pray for the Governing Body.
    • Adhere to instructions and guidelines. „All of us show respect for our Leader, Jesus, by being obedient and submissive to the men he is using to direct us.“

By the way: This article again had a picture with the members of the Governing Body.

Praying for the Governing Body was again emphasized in Watchtower 2022 July. In the explanation of this picture:

w22 July p. 23 „What can we pray about for our brothers and sisters? (See paragraphs 14-16)*“
PICTURE DESCRIPTION: A sister prays that Jehovah bless the Governing Body with his spirit and help those who are suffering from disasters and persecution.

The picture description in the Watchtower says: „A sister prays that Jehovah bless the Governing Body with his spirit …“ Pictured is, of all members of the Governing Body, Anthony Morris III … who since the beginning of 2023 … is no longer part of the Governing Body.

How serious is the Governing Body about being followed?

During the great tribulation, a change will take place regarding the brothers who take the lead on earth. At some point, all anointed ones who are still on earth will be gathered to heaven to share in the war of Armageddon. (Matt. 24:31; Rev. 2:26, 27) This means that the Governing Body will no longer be with us on earth. However, the great crowd will remain organized. Capable brothers from among the other sheep will take the lead. We will need to show our loyalty by supporting these brothers and by following their God-given direction. Our survival will depend on it!

w19 October S. 17-18 par 14 Stay Faithful Through the “Great Tribulation”

So life does not only depend on following the instructions of the present Governing Body, but also their helpers who do not belong to the „faithful and discreet slave“! Did you notice that there is not a single Bible text given here as proof? Well, then there probably isn’t one. But these words of Jesus:

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.

    John 10:27, 28 NIV

What are the duties of the Governing Body now? The Organized Book of Jehovah’s Witnesses, which contains all the organizational instructions for publishers – except for the secret books and letter to elders and branches – states:

5 Throughout the last days, the anointed brothers who constitute “the faithful and discreet slave” have served together at headquarters. Today, these anointed brothers make up the Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
6 … So the faithful slave also oversees material assets, the preaching activity, assembly and convention programs, the appointment of overseers to serve in various capacities in the organization, and the production of Bible literature, all of which benefit the “domestics.”—Matt. 24:45. …

od chap. 3 p. 19-20 “Remember Those Who Are Taking the Lead Among You”

While the Watchtower in 1972 still stated that „The Governing Body has its strictly delimited spiritual field of action.“, now it also controls all material means and the complete organization and even the (eternal) life of every Jehovah’s Witness.

Has anything changed in the position of the Governing Body since then. If one reads this Watchtower from February 2021 superficially, one could almost think so:

The Role of the Governing Body
The members of the Governing Body are not masters over the faith of their brothers and sisters. (2 Cor. 1:24) They recognize Jesus Christ as the head of the Christian congregation, and they agree wholeheartedly with the Lord’s admonition to his disciples: “All of you are brothers.” (Matt. 23:8)

w21 February p. 19 Understanding Headship in the Congregation, Box

But you just have to keep reading in the box:

Under the headship of Christ Jesus, the members of the Governing Body provide helpful direction to organize Jehovah’s people worldwide. … The Governing Body also takes very seriously its responsibility to provide spiritual food and instruction from God’s Word. The Governing Body does so through letters, printed guidelines and publications, JW Broadcasting® programs as well as through schools, meetings, conventions, and assemblies. (Acts 15:22-35)

w21 Februar S. 19 Die Leitung durch ein Haupt in der Versammlung

So there are ‚written guidelines‘ after all. Can you follow them or not? Can you really have a faith that deviates from the teachings of the Governing Body? We do not need to guess. A year later, one could read:

8 Today Jehovah leads the earthly part of his organization by means of “the faithful and discreet slave.” (Matt. 24:45) Like the first-century governing body, this slave oversees God’s people worldwide and gives direction to congregation elders. (Read Acts 16:4, 5.) The elders, in turn, implement the direction in the congregations. We show that we trust in Jehovah’s way of doing things by heeding the direction we receive from the organization and the elders.
15 As the end of this system of things draws near, we need to trust in Jehovah’s way of doing things as never before. Why? During the great tribulation, we may receive instructions that seem strange, impractical, or illogical. Of course, Jehovah will not speak to us personally. He will likely provide direction through his appointed representatives. That will hardly be the time to second-guess the direction or to view it with skepticism, wondering, ‘Is this really coming from Jehovah, or are the responsible brothers acting on their own?’ How will you fare during that crucial time in human history? The answer might be indicated by how you view theocratic direction now. If you trust the direction we receive today and readily obey, you will likely do the same during the great tribulation.—Luke 16:10.

w22 February p. 4 par. 8, 15 Do You Trust in Jehovah’s Way of Doing Things? (Italics and bold in the publication)

    And just three months later:

9 We must reject the teachings of apostates. … What about us today? We must reject any teaching that is opposed to Jehovah’s thinking. Apostates may have “an appearance of godliness,” but they prove “false to its power.” (2 Tim. 3:5) It is easier to identify and reject false teachings when we are diligent students of God’s Word.—2 Tim. 3:14-17; Jude 3, 4.

    w22 May p. 4 par. 9 Revelation—What It Means for You Today

And who determines what is „opposed to Jehovah’s thinking“? The Governing Body! But I am not allowed to quote from the secret herding book for elders … Although. You can even find it on the Internet. So here are the secret instructions to elders, Shepherd the flock of God April 2023 edition, chapter 12 „Determining Whether a Judicial Committee Should Be Formed“.

39 Apostasy: Apostasy is a standing away from true worship, a falling away, defection, rebellion, abandonment. It includes the following:
    (1) Celebrating False Religious Holidays
    (2) Participation in Interfaith Activities
    (3) Deliberately Spreading Teachings Contrary to Bible Truth: (2 John 7, 9, 10; lvs p. 245; it-1 pp. 126-127) Any with sincere doubts regarding the Bible truth taught by Jehovah’s Witnesses should be helped. Loving assistance should be provided. (2 Tim. 2:16-19, 23-26; Jude 22, 23) If one obstinately is speaking about or deliberately spreading false teachings, this may be or may lead to apostasy. If there is no response after a first and a second admonition, a judicial committee should be formed.—Titus 3:10, 11; w86 4/1 pp. 30-31.
    (4) Causing Divisions, Promoting Sects: (Rom. 16:17, 18; Titus 3:10, 11) This would be deliberate action disrupting the unity of the congregation or undermining the confidence of the brothers in Jehovah’s arrangement. It may involve or lead to apostasy.—it-2 p. 886.
    (5) Employment Promoting False Religion
    (6) Spiritism
    (7) Idolatry

Shepherd the flock of God, edition April 2023, chapter 12 Determining Whether a Judicial Committee Should Be Formed

However, the sentence from the Watchtower May 2022 is somehow already correct: „It is easier to identify and reject false teachings when we are diligent students of God’s Word.“ I can really recommend this to every sincere Jehovah’s Witness.

One can also formulate the claim of the Governing Body in relation to the faith of each preacher indirectly, see Watchtower November 2022:

Since 1919 C.E., the anointed have enjoyed living in a spiritual paradise.* As time has progressed, those with an earthly hope, the “other sheep,” have also settled in this spiritual land and have enjoyed Jehovah’s abundant blessings.
Footnote: EXPRESSION EXPLAINED: “Spiritual paradise” refers to the secure environment in which we worship Jehovah in unity. In this environment, we have an abundance of spiritual food that is free from religious lies and we have plenty of satisfying work to do in preaching the good news of God’s Kingdom. We enjoy a close relationship with Jehovah, and we live in peace with our loving brothers and sisters, who help us to endure life’s challenges with joy. We enter the spiritual paradise when we begin worshipping Jehovah in the right way and when we do our best to imitate him.

w22 November How Jehovah Helps Us to Endure With Joy, p. 12 par. 14

And what have we read so many times now in the Watchtower, who provides the „spiritual food“, that is, determines it? The Governing Body …

And there is the current video from 2023 Kenneth Flodin equates the voice of the Governing Body with the voice of Jesus Christ by saying:

„The Governing Body is likened to the voice of Jesus, the head of the assembly. So when we willingly follow the faithful slave [another term for the Governing Body], we are ultimately following Jesus‘ guidance and submitting to his authority.“

Kenneth Flodi, JW Broadcasting, morning worship 2023

I think that says it all.

A ‚council‘ has become the one and only channel of God to whom all possessions have been handed over: Real estate and money, absolute power over the teachings and lives of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

    Christ’s representative on earth.

    I’m exaggerating?

Is Christ to be seen anywhere in the illustration in the Watchtower April 2013? No, but this representative of Christ is to be seen directly under God as number 1 on earth. Even if Catholics are likely to object vehemently here. They have with the pope already the representative of Christ on earth (see e.g. katholisch.de). But that is another topic …

Was that in the illustration in the Watchtower April 2013 just a carelessness? Watchtower 2022 February p. 4. par. 8

Today Jehovah leads the earthly part of his organization by means of “the faithful and discreet slave.” (Matt.
German Edition: When we follow the guidance that comes from Jehovah’s organization and elders, we prove that we trust Jehovah’s course of action.

    Watchtower 2022 February p. 4. par. 8

What does the Bible say? So even the Bible of the Governing Body. Who is in charge of the assembly?

… just as the Christ is head of the congregation …

Epheser 5:23 Neue Welt Übersetzung der Zeugen Jehovas

But that really says it all now.

  • „Why are you looking forward to 1975?“

„Why are you looking forward to 1975?“

    Von Christian

Why should anyone have had any special expectations regarding this year? And why should we still be interested? After all, that was almost 50 years ago in the past! It has something to do with these two Bible texts:

Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.

    Luke 16:10 NIV

You will destroy those who tell lies. The LORD detests murderers and deceivers.

    Psalm 5:7 NLT

We will see that the Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses, by their current statements on the subject in 1975, have proven to be both unreliable and must even be called liars and deceivers. According to Luke 16:10, therefore, they should not be trusted even in major matters, and according to Psalm 5:7, they are even an abomination to Yahweh. I know these are strong words, but the evidence will follow.

When Anthony Morris III was still part of the Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses, he completely distorted the facts of events prior to 1975 on JW Broadcasting in 2022. And in the process he made fun of some ‚faithful older brothers‘ of that time.

For me, this also has a personal component. My maternal grandparents were already Bible Students in the early 1920s. They themselves witnessed the predictions of the president of the Watchtower organization, J.F. Rutherford for the year 1925, which did not come true: „Millions now living will never die!“ This was proclaimed not only by Rutherford for years but by Bible Students worldwide. But this prediction did not come true. But it was also never openly admitted and is transfigured until today (see w22 October p.2 1922—One Hundred Years Ago, w20 October p. 2 1920—One Hundred Years Ago).

„Newspaper advertisement for the talk “Millions Now Living Will Never Die”” Watchtower 2020 October p. 2
„Poster advertising the lecture given in London’s Royal Albert Hall“ Watchtower 2020 October p. 4.

When expectations were announced again, this time for the year 1975, my grandfather said to my grandmother, „We have seen that in 1925 the hopes were not fulfilled. And we said that we want to serve Jehovah forever. That is what we are going to do now.“ For this reasonable attitude, however, he got quite a beating from his fellow elders: „You can’t say that!“

Well, these were just ordinary publishers in the congregation. And many publishers had simply got carried away with false expectations. This narrative has been spread by the Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses for a long time. But was it really only some proclaimers who expected too much in 1975? Let us now examine this on the basis of the publications of the Governing Body.

In 1968, the Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses posed the above question to all preachers and people worldwide in the Watchtower:

Warum freust du dich auf 1975?
    Watchtower 1968 Aug. 15 p. 494 (English); Watchtower 1968 Nov. 15 p. 686 (German)

In the English edition, the question translates as, „Why are you looking forward to 1975?“ The German-language article, however, had a modified theme, „What do you expect from 1975?“ Well, what were the expectations of the Governing Body:

Are we to assume from this study that the battle of Armageddon will be all over by the autumn of 1975, and the long-looked-for thousand-year reign of Christ will begin by then? Possibly, but we wait to see how closely the seventh thousand-year period of man’s existence coincides with the sabbathlike thousand-year reign of Christ. If these two periods run parallel with each other as to the calendar year, it will not be by mere chance or accident but will be according to Jehovah’s loving and timely purposes.

    w68 8/15 p. 499 paragraph 30

One thing is absolutely certain, Bible chronology reinforced with fulfilled Bible prophecy shows that six thousand years of man’s existence will soon be up, yes, within this generation! (Matt. 24:34) This is, therefore, no time to be indifferent and complacent. This is not the time to be toying with the words of Jesus that “concerning that day and hour nobody knows, neither the angels of the heavens nor the Son, but only the Father.” (Matt. 24:36) To the contrary, it is a time when one should be keenly aware that the end of this system of things is rapidly coming to its violent end. Make no mistake, it is sufficient that the Father himself knows both the “day and hour”!

    w68 8/15 p. 499 paragraph 35

However, this is only one article of many. At the end of the article I will list some more. (Many can also be found in English at jwfacts.com and in Raymond Franz book „The Conflict of Conscience“ and James Penton book „End Times Without End“).

However, all the hype about 1975 really began with this book in 1966:

Cover: Life everlasting in freedom of the sons of god
Einband: Ewiges Leben in der Freiheit der Söhne Gottes
Cover: Life everlasting in freedom of the sons of god (German)

It was this table with the calculation leading to the year 1975, as well as some statements about it in the text, that caused enthusiasm already at the 1966 Congress after its publication.

Tabelle Ewiges Leben in der Freiheit der Söhne Gottes
Table 1/3 Life everlasting in freedom of the sons of god (German)
Tabelle 2/2 Ewiges Leben in der Freiheit der Söhne Gottes
Table 2/3 Life everlasting in freedom of the sons of god (German)
Tabelle 3/3 Ewiges Leben in der Freiheit der Söhne Gottes
Table 1/3 Life everlasting in freedom of the sons of god (German)
Table 3/3 Life everlasting in freedom of the sons of god

It is worth taking a look at the data in the last part of the table.

    • That the conquest of Jerusalem in 607 BCE did not take place has already been sufficiently proven.
    • Interestingly, at around 49, there is no mention of the Governing Body in Jerusalem. No wonder, it did not exist among Jehovah’s Witnesses for many years after 1966.
    • That in 1492 the pope supposedly died from a blood transfusion … somehow seems to have been very important in the divine timetable.
    • The explanation for 1914 (October! ) is interesting, but there is a whole book on that („The Gentile Times Reconsidered“ and the addendum „The Times of the Gentiles“ in Luke 21:24).
    • Unfortunately, 1925 is not mentioned, when for about 6 years before that it was preached that „millions now living will never die.“
    • But instead, the topic of blood transfusion in 1918.
    • Satellites and astronauts in 1957 and 1964: One remembers; „Signs on moon and stars“.

But let’s go back to the development before 1975. Expectations were fueled throughout the following years until 1975 (see quotes below).

If you like, you can also listen to the striking words of the German branch servant Konrad Franke on the subject in 1975 (talk at January 20, 1968 in Hamburg, text here). However, it must be said that two years later he was no longer a branch leader. It’s in German (Note: Its sounds somewhat like a talk in the 1930s, but it isn’t), but you can find similar recordings in English.

But back to the starting point. So what did Anthony Morris of the Governing Body say in the 2022 broadcast on jw.org (JW Broadcasting—February 2022: Annual Meeting 2021, Part 2JW Broadcasting February 2022: Annual Meeting 2021 (Part 2) German“ after about one hour and 44 minutes)? Here are the screen captures of the original video with German subtitles and translation by the Watchtower Society.

„So they’d listen, and they appreciated all theses older ones. We had a number of them in Rhode Island. – Longtime servants of Jehovah God. However, from time to time – this statement – they’d be looking at my sons and say: “

JW Broadcasting February 2022: Annual Meeting 2021 (Part 2)

    Than he says:

JW Broadcasting February 2022: Annual Meeting 2021 (Part 2)

    And than this:

JW Broadcasting Februar 2022: Jahresversammlung 2021 (Teil 2)

Because he told his boys at the time: it „might take until 2020“

JW Broadcasting February 2022: Annual Meeting 2021 (Part 2)

This gives the impression of how wise and farsighted this brother, this anointed one, who later belonged to the Governing Body himself, was even then. (In 2023, Brother Morris was removed from the Governing Body. For a few days, this event was available first as breaking news and then as news. Then this news was removed again. As were other videos of him, for example: By Condemning „Despicable Apostates“, has the Governing Body Condemned Themselves?).

How then did these ‚older brothers‘ come to their wrong attitude? Straightforward answer: Awake 1969 May 22 p. 14 and 15.

    g69_may_22_14
    Awake 1969 May 22 p. 14 (English)
    g69_may_22_15
    Awake 1969 May 22 p. 15 (English)

How ‚fortunate‘ that the online JW Library does not contain any pre-1970 editions of the Awake (German and English) and that the Governing Body has instructed elders in recent years to destroy older literature in the congregation.

But they still exist, the digitized editions. Some excerpts from the text:

Youg or old, you need to face up to the fact that this system is not going to change its direction. Under Satan’s influence, it will continue to deteriorate rapidly in its remaining years.
If you are a youn gperson, you also need to face the fact that you will never grow old in this present system of things. Why not? Because all the evidence in fulfillment of Bible prophecy indicates that this corrupt system is due to end in a a few years. Of the generation that observed the beginning of the „last days“ in 1914, Jesus foretold: „This generation will by no means pass away until all these things occur.“ – Matt. 24:34
Therefore, as a young person, you will never fulfill any career that this system offers. If you are in high school and thinking about a college education, it means at least four, perhaps even six or eight more years to graduate into a specialized career. But where will this system of things be by that time? It will be well on the way toward its finish, if not actually gone!

    Awake 1969 May 22 p. 14-15

If you calculate from the year of publication of this article 1969, you come to which year with these statements? 1973, 1975, 1977 … That’s when „the system is on its way to its end, or even gone.“
How could these ‚older brothers‘ ever get the idea that Anthony Morris children will not finish their education …?

So Anthony Morris clearly did not teach his children at that time according to the ‚light‘ and the ‚truth of that time‘ of the ‚faithful and discreet slave‘ – Nathan Knorr and Fred Franz respectively and later the Governing Body. Amazing why he was not disfellowship at that time, since the doctrine was not, even in the 1970s, that the end might not come until 2020. Even more amazing, perhaps, is that he then became part of the Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

What did the Governing Body publish after 1975?

SINCE a new Jewish lunar year began in September 1975 a significant point in human history was reached. What was that? According to the Bible’s count of time, mankind then completed 6,000 years of existence on earth. Yes, the first man Adam, if he had chosen to remain obedient under God’s rulership, would have still been alive and 6,000 years old in September of this year.

    w75 10/1 p. 579 The End of 6,000 Years of Man-Rule Approaches—What Has Been Accomplished?

So somehow they tried to turn the issue around. But the uproar was probably too great. What could you read in 1976?

15 But it is not advisable for us to set our sights on a certain date, neglecting everyday things we would ordinarily care for as Christians, such as things that we and our families really need. We may be forgetting that, when the “day” comes, it will not change the principle that Christians must at all times take care of all their responsibilities. If anyone has been disappointed through not following this line of thought, he should now concentrate on adjusting his viewpoint, seeing that it was not the word of God that failed or deceived him and brought disappointment, but that his own understanding was based on wrong premises.

16 However, say that you are one who counted heavily on a date, and, commendably, set your attention more strictly on the urgency of the times and the need of the people to hear. And say you now, temporarily, feel somewhat disappointed; are you really the loser? Are you really hurt? We believe you can say that you have gained and profited by taking this conscientious course. Also, you have been enabled to get a really mature, more reasonable viewpoint.—Eph. 5:1-17.

17 The Scriptures repeatedly tell us that the end will come as a complete surprise upon the world.  … Thereafter he said: “Prove yourselves ready, because at an hour that you do not think to be it, the Son of man is coming.” (Matt. 24:42-44) These clear statements of Jesus indicate that God’s servants will never be given the date of Christ’s “coming” for judgment until it actually takes place. In fact, it will come at what appears to them an ‘unlikely’ time.—Luke 12:39, 40.

    w76 7/15 p. 438ff par. 15-17 A Solid Basis for Confidence

How would you have felt about this in 1976? As a kind of apology? Or did the Governing Body take responsibility? Interestingly, in paragraph 17, using the same text from Matthew, the exact opposite is now said of what was published before 1975. What could one read in the Watchtower article quoted at the beginning „What do you expect from 1975?“ then?

This is, therefore, no time to be indifferent and complacent. This is not the time to be toying with the words of Jesus that “concerning that day and hour nobody knows, neither the angels of the heavens nor the Son, but only the Father.” (Matt. 24:36)

    w68 Aug. 15 pp. 500-501 paras. 35 „Why Are You Looking Forward to 1975?“ (English); w68 Nov. 15 pp. 692-693 paras. 35 „Was erwartest du von 1975?“ (German)

That probably led to even more disappointment for many, and so this was written in 1980:

5 In modern times such eagerness, commendable in itself, has led to attempts at setting dates for the desired liberation from the suffering and troubles that are the lot of persons throughout the earth. With the appearance of the book Life Everlasting—in Freedom of the Sons of God, and its comments as to how appropriate it would be for the millennial reign of Christ to parallel the seventh millennium of man’s existence, considerable expectation was aroused regarding the year 1975. There were statements made then, and thereafter, stressing that this was only a possibility. Unfortunately, however, along with such cautionary information, there were other statements published that implied that such realization of hopes by that year was more of a probability than a mere possibility. It is to be regretted that these latter statements apparently overshadowed the cautionary ones and contributed to a buildup of the expectation already initiated.

6 In its issue of July 15, 1976, The Watchtower, commenting on the inadvisability of setting our sights on a certain date, stated: “If anyone has been disappointed through not following this line of thought, he should now concentrate on adjusting his viewpoint, seeing that it was not the word of God that failed or deceived him and brought disappointment, but that his own understanding was based on wrong premises.” In saying “anyone,” The Watchtower included all disappointed ones of Jehovah’s Witnesses, hence including persons having to do with the publication of the information that contributed to the buildup of hopes centered on that date.

w80 3/15 p. 17 Choosing the Best Way of Life (Italics in article)

Is this an excuse or is there not another attempt here to roll the responsibility onto the ordinary Witness? It is admitted that the Watchtower wrote only about ’someone‘ in 1976. And then those responsible for the Governing Body place themselves in the ranks of the „disappointed Jehovah’s Witnesses“: „also those who had to do with the publication of the information“. And what about those who were responsible for writing and publishing, namely the Governing Body? Also, paragraph 5 distorts the facts regarding publications: There were far fewer „other statements.“ And if anything was left open, it was only what would happen. This can also be seen if one reads more closely in the Proclaimers book what F. Franz said at a congress:

“Say, What Does This 1975 Mean?”
The Witnesses had long shared the belief that the Thousand Year Reign of Christ would follow after 6,000 years of human history. But when would 6,000 years of human existence end? The book Life Everlasting—In Freedom of the Sons of God, released at a series of district conventions held in 1966, pointed to 1975. Right at the convention, as the brothers examined the contents, the new book triggered much discussion about 1975.

At the convention held in Baltimore, Maryland, F. W. Franz gave the concluding talk. He began by saying: “Just before I got on the platform a young man came to me and said, ‘Say, what does this 1975 mean?’” Brother Franz then referred to the many questions that had arisen as to whether the material in the new book meant that by 1975 Armageddon would be finished, and Satan would be bound. He stated, in essence: ‘It could. But we are not saying. All things are possible with God. But we are not saying. And don’t any of you be specific in saying anything that is going to happen between now and 1975. But the big point of it all is this, dear friends: Time is short. Time is running out, no question about that.’

In the years following 1966, many of Jehovah’s Witnesses acted in harmony with the spirit of that counsel. However, other statements were published on this subject, and some were likely more definite than advisable. This was acknowledged in The Watchtower of March 15, 1980 (page 17). But Jehovah’s Witnesses were also cautioned to concentrate mainly on doing Jehovah’s will and not to be swept up by dates and expectations of an early salvation.

    Proclaimers jv chapter 8 p.104

So what did Vice President F. W. Franz really say? That nobody should say something definite about what happens before 1975! But there would be no doubt that the time is short and runs out. Nothing more really needs to be said about that, does it? Apparently it does, because in the next paragraph it is shown again that it was the preachers who would not have listened to the admonition. By the way, of the four sources given, two are from 1974 and 1975 … someone must have gotten cold feet. In the same years, however, this was also published:

How Are You Using Your Life?
Yes, since the summer of 1973 there have been new peaks in pioneers every month. Now there are 20,394 regular and special pioneers in the United States, an all-time peak. That is 5,190 more than there were in February 1973! A 34-percent increase! Does that not warm our hearts? Reports are heard of brothers selling their homes and property and planning to finish out the rest of their days in this old system in the pioneer service. Certainly this is a fine way to spend the short time remaining before the wicked world’s end. —1 John 2:17.

Kingdom Ministry May 1974 (English page 4-5)

A letter from people who are concerned about you
    September 1, 1974

…Jehovah’s Witnesses around the world would hold two special meetings in September…..
Why is this special meeting being held? Because the times in which we live make it imperative that you carefully and prayerfully consider your position before Jehovah God. You are probably already aware that for the present godless world in 1914 CE the „last days“ – as the Bible calls them – have dawned, which will now soon end with the destruction of this world….
Consequently, the generation that was an eyewitness to the events of 1914 CE will be the generation that will also experience the „great tribulation.“ Nearly sixty years have already passed. The number of those who consciously experienced the year 1914 is decreasing. It is thus clear that the time has come near when Jehovah God will act. …
Since the „great tribulation“ is obviously near, we would urge you not to delay now. …

    Kingdom Ministry km 74/8 p. 4 German

Finally, a video was shown at a district congress a few years ago, where it was also shown how some people at that time probably got the idea that the end would come in 1975. Who has seen only this congress video, would never have come on the idea, what was really published. And we only watched a small excerpt.

But I think that is enough to ask oneself quite openly and honestly the question: Should we trust the Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses, even entrust our lives to them? Let us remember Jesus‘ words:

Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.

    Luke 16:10 NIV

Some more detailed quotes from the German publications. Newer publications have the same publishing date in English. Before, the English version of the Watchtower was published about 3 months earlier. :

  • „This generation …“

    „This generation …“

    Von Christian

When I hear about ‚the last generation‘ today, I just have to think about that ‚last generation‘ sometimes:

    „The last generation“ – in 1984

At that time, it was not really called ‚the last generation‘, but ‚the generation that will not pass away‘. But for Jehovah’s Witnesses at that time, ‚this generation‘ definitely also had a very special meaning. Why was this so? The following text from Matthew 24:35 was already important for the serious Bible researchers, but especially for Jehovah’s Witnesses it is of enormous importance, because also with this Bible text for now about 150 years is warned of the ‚imminent‘ end:

„Truly I say to YOU that this generation will by no means pass away until all these things occur.“

    (Matthew 24:35 New-World-Translation with References)

„Truly I say to you that this generation will by no means pass away until all these things happen.“

    (Matthäus 24:35 New-World-Translation 2013)

At this point, we will not go into detail about this teaching. It is enough here to ask what the Bible said about ‚this generation‘ in context:

Departing now, Jesus was on his way from the temple, but his disciples approached to show him the buildings of the temple. In response he said to them: “Do YOU not behold all these things? Truly I say to YOU, By no means will a stone be left here upon a stone and not be thrown down.” While he was sitting upon the Mount of Olives, the disciples approached him privately, saying: “Tell us, When will these things be, and what will be the sign of your presence and of the conclusion of the system of things?”

    (Matthew 24:1-3 NWT)

“Tell us, When will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are destined to come to a conclusion?”

    (Mark 13:4 NWT)

Then they questioned him, saying: “Teacher, when will these things actually be, and what will be the sign when these things are destined to occur?”

    (Luke 21:7 NWT)

So what events was Jesus referring to when he spoke of ‚this generation‘ who would experience ‚all these things‘? The biblical text here clearly speaks of events in connection with the temple in Jerusalem and the surrounding area. The Bible says nothing about an anti-type or second fulfillment.

It is also noticeable that in Mark and Luke the reference to Jesus‘ presence and the end of the world is missing. There are good reasons to believe that this is a falsified addition to the Gospel of Matthew (see here for a more detailed reasoning and 2001 Translation).

As I said, we do not want to go into this topic in more detail here, because there are also extensive books and videos on this subject (here is a small selection):

But did the Bible Students and later the Jehovah’s Witnesses always spread the same doctrine regarding ‚the generation‘ here? If you have been a Jehovah’s Witness for a longer period of time or if you have studied the literature of Jehovah’s Witnesses, you will quickly see that there have been a number of changes.

But to really grasp the extent of the changes in the teachings of Jehovah’s Witnesses regarding ‚the generation‘, I once created a video showing the most important changes in the definition in correct time. In the upper left you can see how many generations of 30 years each would really have passed. The arrows below show how long in advance a prediction was given based on ‚the generation‘ and when they were changed: Namely, whenever they had not come true.

Changes in the teaching about ’The Generation‘

Here is the source material (in German) listed in chronological order:

And the detailed sources as PDF document (in German):

  • The Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses Makes a (Bible) Book Disappear – Part 2

The Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses Makes a (Bible) Book Disappear – Part 2

    Von Christian

In the first part (text, video) we saw how the Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses has made the book Commentary on the Letter of James disappear in the digitized world. In the many comments on the video, there was also a comment that I would like to address now.

„This can not be the reason“

One of the comments was: that Edward Dunlap was the author of the book who was expelled for ‚apostasy‘ and the book disappeared because of that, that can’t be the reason.

Therefore, I checked all the years since 1970 to see if there were any other books that were not included in the online library. Of course, at some point the books are no longer reprinted. Some time ago there was even a letter (i.e. instruction) from the Governing Body to the elders to destroy stocks of older literature.

But the other books since 1970 are all in the online library. So, part of the ’spiritual heritage‘ so to speak. Now everyone can draw his own conclusions from this.

The 1988 Revelation book was not available online for a while. In the meantime, it has entered the library as a 2006 edition. Other books are also now available online in new editions – that is, generally changed from the printed book. Some may remember the confusion in meetings when some used the printed books, others used the printed corrections, and then later used the constantly updated edition in the JW Library. I once made the joke as Watchtower study leader that I hoped no update of the article was available during Watchtower study …

And finally, there are the books that were regularly replaced. The books for Bible studies, for example. But also the Organized Books (or previously booklets and book appendices) – with sometimes significant changes in the text.

But a completely different question had occurred to me….

Does the organization still use the Bible book of James at all?

This question came to me as I reflected on the last few years. Could I remember that James was quoted from at all? If you are or were a Jehovah’s Witness, can you remember being quoted from James?

I didn’t want to rely on a vague memory or a feeling. Well, the analyst in me came through. And now you have to go through with it. But don’t worry, I’m just presenting the results.

How many times was James quoted?

So I analyzed the literature index in the German index from 1945-1985 and 1986-2022. The English index still goes back to 1930, but that makes no difference here. First, let’s see if the numbers are correct. James has 5 chapters and 108 verses. How often do you think it is quoted per year? And I apologize for the German titles in the graphics. (The original article I had written in my native language German).

In fact, this number of 108 version is even exceeded in 1979. In that year, the commentary on the Letter of James was published, which deals with all the verses. So this fits.

In 1997 there are still 102 quotations. In three study articles of the Watchtower w97 15.11. the complete Letter of James is treated. A few pages instead of a whole book. Oh well. Let’s have a look at the conclusion.

    Wie beginnt Absatz 22?

Clearly, the letter of James contains something beneficial for all of us.

    w97 11/15. p 24 par. 22

Then actually also diligently from this book should be quoted, right? But that is not the case in most of the last 80 years. How does the Governing Body summarize the consideration of the Book of James?

True, the letter of James was originally sent to anointed early Christians. Yet, all of us should let its counsel help us cling to our faith. James’ words can bolster faith that moves us to decisive action in God’s service. And this divinely inspired letter builds an enduring faith that makes us patient, prayerful Witnesses of Jehovah today, during “the presence of the Lord” Jesus Christ.

    w97 11/15. p 24 par. 23

The paragraph begins with „It is true …“, but at the end I wondered: Is any of what the Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses had written in this paragraph true? Remember, this was read to every Witness in Watchtower studies worldwide at that time!

    • No, it is not true that the letter of James was written to one group of Christians in the first century, but today it also applies to the vast majority of witnesses, the so-called ‚other sheep‘. For the doctrine of heavenly and earthly hope, ‚anointed remnant‘ and ‚other sheep‘ comes not from the Bible but from the pen of J.F. Rutherford. (See, for example, the video Identifying True Worship, Part 8: Jehovah’s Witnesses‘ Teaching on the ‚Other Sheep‘).
    • And wasn’t it exactly this point why two years after the publication of the Commentary on the Letter of James in the Watchtower 1981 ‚Questions from Readers‘ a retraction was published (w81 4/15 p. 31), with the content that this teaching still applies? There, the term ‚anointed Christians‘ was subsequently introduced into the text of the book in order to adapt the book to the teaching. That was surely also a reason, beside the community withdrawal of its author, why the James book fell into disfavor.
    • There will soon also be a video on the term ‚anointed Christians‘. You probably already suspect that there is something wrong with it too.
    • Of course, the ‚reference‘ to „decisive action in the service of God“ must not be missing. So the usual subtle pressure to perform that was constantly exerted. Where in James does it say anything about „acting decisively in service to God“, which every witness will associate with the preaching ministry? What does James really say? James 1:27 according to the New World Translation of Jehovah’s Witnesses, „The form of worship [Fn. religion] that is clean and undefiled from the standpoint of our God and Father is this: to look after orphans and widows in their tribulation, and to keep oneself without spot from the world.“ And this is a text that is often used, as we shall see in a moment.
    • That this is immediately followed by the reference to „today, during the „presence of the Lord“ Jesus Christ“ is also a recurring pattern. It establishes and increases the ’sense of urgency‘, because there is not much time left for „decisive action in the service of God“. Except that the Bible book of James does not say that „today“ – some 25 years ago – Jesus is invisibly present. Another central doctrine that the Governing Body holds to ironcladly, even though it does not stand up to the facts (see Identifying True Worship, Part 5: 1914 – A Review of Jehovah’s Witnesses‘ Doctrine and the book The Times of the Gentiles Reconsidered).
    • And why does that make one a „prayerful Jehovah’s Witness“? Where is that supposed to be in James?
    • I also noticed the word „patient“. Not only because the motto of the 2023 Assembly of Jehovah’s Witnesses is „Practice Patience.“ The congress begins with: PRESIDENT’S LECTURE: Exercise patience – why? (James 5:7, 8; Colossians 1:9-11; 3:12) And indeed James is quoted. But what do we read there? James 5:7 “ Be patient therefore, brethren, until the coming of the Lord!“ (Elberfelder). Until the coming of the Lord! But according to the teachings of the Governing Body, the Lord has already been present since 1914! So this hint of James has been settled, hasn’t it? But the Watchtower is already a quarter of a century old.
    • And did you notice that in the summary last two paragraphs, not even one statement is backed up with a reference to a biblical text?

But actually I wanted to focus on the use of the Bible book of James and just take a quick look at the Watchtower article … .

The 59 references in 1990 lead mostly to the two volumes of Insights on the Scriptures. In 1962, there were few articles in the Watchtower and Awake in which James was considered. James, however, seemed to be quite fond of quoting during this period. Likewise in the years before 1979, the publication of the vanished book.

About 10 references in 20 years only! Most of them in the book Come closer to Jehovah and the Organized book (od). Not until 2021 in Happy – Forever. An interactive Bible course James is used again. Before that, not at all for many years. My impression is that in the last quarter century James no longer played a role for the Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses. And that I could not remember the use of it, so it was true.

Which verses are quoted frequently, and which are not quoted at all?

In a book like the Commentary on the Epistle of James, every verse was looked at. Even the 3 articles in the Watchtower 1997 15.11. somehow manage to refer to almost all verses. But how else were the individual verses from James used in the literature of Jehovah’s Witnesses?

At first glance, a few verses stand out. There are a few verses that are used much more frequently than others. There is some methodology behind this that we will see when we look at these verses in a moment. A verse that appears in this chart with only 2 uses has never otherwise been used in 80 years except in the Commentary on the Letter of James and the one Watchtower in 1997!

So let’s first take a look at some of the most cited texts. Please do not cheat yet. Try to remember, if you are or were a Jehovah’s Witness, which texts come to your mind.

    The most quoted verses

As you can see, a whole 3 verses are used very frequently, and then it decreases steeply.

    James 1:27

The form of worship [Fn. religion] that is clean and undefiled from the standpoint of our God and Father is this: to look after orphans and widows in their tribulation, and to keep oneself without spot from the world.

    James 1:27 NWT 2013

This text is used quite often because of the last part: Keep separate from the evil world, no close association with worldly people. But what do you think James meant when he spoke of „looking after orphans and widows in their distress“? Probably this:

What if certain older ones cannot attend Christian meetings? James 1:27 shows that it is our duty “to look after orphans and widows in their tribulation.” One meaning of the Greek verb translated “to look after” is “to visit.” (Acts 15:36) And how the elderly appreciate our visits!

    w04 5/15. p. 19 par. 17

Were there not collections of donations in the first century to support the impoverished brothers and sisters? Wasn’t that the second main task given to Paul? And what does the organization of Jehovah’s Witnesses not carry out today, forbidding elders to do so officially as a congregation? Now, if anyone thinks of the relief efforts during disasters, they should take a close look at where these things come from. And to whom the reimbursements from insurance companies are supposed to flow later …

    James 4:4

Adulteresses, [Fn. Or “You unfaithful ones.”] do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever, therefore, wants to be a friend of the world is making himself an enemy of God

    Jakobus 4:4 NWÜ

„Not to be a friend of the world.“ This is quoted as often as James 1:27. And in the sense of: Have no friends in the world. Otherwise you are an enemy of God. Is ‚world‘ in this text about people at all? Or something else? „Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them.“ (1. John 2:15 NIV)

By the way: It is also not surprising that in German the feminine of the Greek is gladly left here, and not the masculine of the Latin translation. But that is another topic.

    James 5:14

Is there anyone sick among you? Let him call the elders of the congregation to him, and let them pray over him, applying oil to him in the name of Jehovah.

    James 5:14 NWT

This text must not be missing in any judicial committee. And that is why it is quoted so often. For example, in the online Bible course of 2021:

Jehovah wants us to call the elders of the congregation to us when we have committed a serious sin. (Read James 5:14, 15.)

Happy – forever. An interactive Bible course p. 237 (German)

Does James then speak in 5:14 of the person having committed a sin? So a ’serious sin‘ as it says in the text but not in the Bible. The context is James 5:13-15 and ends like this, „Also, if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven“ (James 5:15 NWT) We should always read the context and read carefully what is written.

    James 1:5

So if any one of you is lacking in wisdom, let him keep asking God, for he gives generously to all and without reproaching, and it will be given him.

    James 1:5 NWT

People like to quote that in relation to all kinds of things. But in context, it’s about a particular situation. This was still well explained in the book of James: „The wisdom Christians ask for is the wisdom to live in such a way as to please God in every area of their lives, especially under trials.“

    James 3:17

But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peaceable, reasonable, ready to obey, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial, not hypocritical.

    James 3:17 NWT

This text contains so many valuable thoughts that it may well be used frequently. One example:

14“Ready to obey.” The Greek word rendered “ready to obey” is not found elsewhere in the Christian Greek Scriptures. According to one scholar, this word “is often used of military discipline.” It conveys the idea of “easy to be persuaded” and “submissive.” One who is governed by the wisdom from above readily submits to what the Scriptures say. He is not known as one who makes up his mind and then refuses to be influenced by any facts that contradict him. Rather, he is quick to change when he is presented with clear Scriptural evidence that he has taken a wrong stand or has drawn erroneous conclusions. Is that how you are known by others?

Draw Close to Jehovah p. 224 par. 14

A word that occurs only once in the Bible – then the interpretation is often difficult. But it’s actually a nice quote for those Jehovah’s Witnesses who don’t want to engage in a conversation based on the Bible.

    James 5:16

Therefore, openly confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. A righteous man’s supplication has a powerful effect.

    James 5:16 NWT

Often cited for the idea of praying for each other. But also like this:

So, then, when is it appropriate for Christians to confess sins to one another? In the case of serious sin (not every little failing), an individual should confess to responsible overseers of the congregation. Even if a sin is not grievous but the sinner’s conscience troubles him excessively, there is great value in confessing and seeking spiritual help.

    w91 3/15 p. 6-7

Would you say that this thought comes from James 5:16 in the sense of exegesis? Or was something eisegetically interpreted into it?

Verses that are almost never quoted

Of course, Bible texts that are never or almost never quoted are also interesting. Are they perhaps not so important? Perhaps only greetings to Christians in the 1st century? But they could also be interesting texts, which the organization prefers not to see mentioned.

The least quoted verses are these:

    • James 3:12 Is only found once in the James book and Watchtower 1960. Context is James 3:8 ‚tongue‘.
    • James 2:11 example of v10, only in James book and w97 summary.
    • James 2:6 „YOU, though, have dishonored the poor [man]. The rich oppress YOU, and they drag YOU before law courts, do they not?“ Only in the book of James and w97 and g62. Reminds one already that the various bodies of the organization are increasingly suing publishers, so-called apostates and others for statements or copyright violations.
    • James 1:16 „Do not be misled, my beloved brothers.“ Only in the book Commentary James is the beautiful statement found.
    • James 4:9,10 „Give way to misery and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned into mourning, and your joy into despair. Humble yourselves in the eyes of Jehovah, and he will exalt you.“ Probably doesn’t fit the narrative that Jehovah’s Witnesses are the happiest people in the world.(With the best life ever …)
    • James 5:4, 5 „Look! The wages due the workers who harvested YOUR fields but which are held up by YOU, keep crying out, and the calls for help on the part of the reapers have entered into the ears of Jehovah of armies. YOU have lived in luxury upon the earth and have gone in for sensual pleasure. [Fn. Lit., “you behaved voluptuously.”]“ How many Jehovah’s Witnesses live in very humble circumstances because they gave up ‚higher education‘ from training so close to the end, were in full-time service or Bethel for a long time, and then were turned out a few years ago at an advanced age? What would James have said if, on the other hand, he looked at pictures of the new world headquarters in Warwick, for example, or saw on the videos the Governing Body with gold rings, expensive watches, etc.?

There are then also a few very rarely used texts that would have really led to discussions.

They blaspheme the fine name by which YOU were called, do they not?

    James 2:7 NWT

That could well have led to confusion. For which name is meant here? Jehovah? 1 Peter 4:14 „If YOU are being reproached for the name of Christ, YOU are happy, because the [spirit] of glory, even the spirit of God, is resting upon YOU.“ (Also NWT!). Which also fits with baptism in the name of Christ.

Nevertheless, a certain one will say: “You have faith, and I have works. Show me your faith apart from the works, and I shall show you my faith by my works.”

    James 2:18 NWT

Amazing that this verse was only used here (German versions): w97 15. 11. 15; cj 80-3; w74 1. 4. 212-13 Faith without works is dead; g62 22. 1. 3 Perhaps it is because of the second part: „I shall show you my faith by my works.“ This would almost be a challenge to check the activities of a Jehovah’s Witness. But maybe only one of the texts on the subject of works was chosen over and over again.

For, if a man with gold rings on his fingers and in splendid clothing enters into a gathering of YOU, but a poor [man] in filthy clothing also enters, …

    James 2:2 NWT

A man with gold rings on his fingers …. Well, one or the other gold ring or expensive watch has been seen on JW Broadcasting ….

    Other hardly quoted texts

My brothers, if anyone among YOU is misled from the truth and another turns him back, know that he who turns a sinner back from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.

    James 5:19,20 NWT

    Verse 19 was quoted only here (German versions): w97 15. 11. 24 cj 214-16 w72 1. 11. 658 or 159 w61 1. 8. 464 w51 1. 7. 203

What if a member of the congregation is “misled from the truth,” deviating from right teaching and conduct? We may be able to turn him back from his error through Bible counsel, prayer, and other help.

    w97 11/15 p.24 par. 21 English version

This seems to contradict the current policy of exclusion and avoidance. So the text is ignored.

Was not Abraham our father declared righteous by works after he had offered up Isaac his son upon the altar?

    James 2:21 NWT

Probably this text was practically not used because Abraham is called ‚our father‘ (‚our ancestor‘ NLT) there. In the Insights book (it-1 p. 1253), therefore, Galatians 3:29 is used to justify that James is not addressing Jews here, but all. Otherwise the text is simply not quoted.

My brothers, YOU are not holding the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, our glory, with acts of favoritism, are YOU?

    James 2:1 NWT

Let’s compare this with a representative other translation:

My brothers, as you hold out your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, do not show favoritism.

    James 2:1 Berean Standard Bible

All translations I have checked (German, English, interlinear) speak of our faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. Except for the old King James Version. The emphasis on faith – not in Jehovah – but in Jesus, who is also referred to as our Lord of Glory, has not fit into the Governing Body’s program for decades. So this text is also ignored. Otherwise, one could get confused even with these rarely quoted texts:

That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.

    James 1:7 NIV

Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.”

    James 4:15 NIV

In both texts, by the way, the ‚Lord‘ in the original text is naturally replaced by ‚Jehovah‘ in the New World translation.

YOU too exercise patience; make YOUR hearts firm, because the presence of the Lord has drawn close.

    James 5:8 NWT

This text was dormant for almost 25 years until it was rediscovered for the 2023 convention. Already in the Watchtower 1999 it was emphasized that patience is necessary while ‚waiting for Jehovah‘. Well actually the text is about the presence of the Lord. Whereby even in the NWT here Lord is not replaced by Jehovah. But doesn’t the text speak of having patience before the presence of the Lord? And does not the Governing Body teach that this invisible presence began in 1914? Then James must have meant the second coming (or presence), which we do not find in the Bible.

Therefore, if one knows how to do what is right and yet does not do it, it is a sin for him.

    James 4:17 NWT

Not quoted for over 25 years. At that time, however, you could read:

The deeper our Scriptural knowledge is, the better is the foundation for our faith. At the same time, our accountability to God becomes greater. …
After commenting on the significance of this scripture, the elder said: “Though you are not baptized, you are accountable and must take full responsibility for your decision.”

    w96 9/15 p. 17 par. 5,6

Well, isn’t that true of all Jehovah’s Witnesses? The Governing Body knows that many teachings are not biblical and contradict historical facts. And many Jehovah’s Witnesses know this by now, too. What conclusion do we draw for ourselves from James 4:17?

Listen, my beloved brothers. God chose the ones who are poor respecting the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he promised to those who love him, did he not?

    James 2:5 NWT

This text was only touched upon in the 1997 Watchtower’s James reflection, explained in the 1979 James book, and mentioned a whole 5 times before that. But it also shows that there is only one hope for all Christians. Interestingly, this is also formulated on p. 65 of the James book. Presumably, the book is therefore also no longer available because it makes no distinction between ‚anointed‘ and ‚other sheep‘.

We could analyze more verses here, but I think this is enough for now to draw some conclusions.

    Summary

    What did our analysis reveal?

    • Of the Watchtower Society books published since 1970, all can be found in the Online Library. With the exception of the Organized Book, which has been replaced by the Organization Book. And just the Commentary on the Letter of James.
    • The Bible book James is used relatively little. Frequently only in 1979, when the Commentary on the Letter of James appeared. And in 1997, when in the Watchtower w97 15.11 the complete letter of James was treated in only three articles. In 1990 there are still some references in the two volumes of the Insights book.
    • For about 25 years, James is practically no longer quoted. About 10 references only. Most in the book Draw Close to Jehovah and the Organized book (od). Not until 2021 in Enjoy Life Forever!—An Interactive Bible Course, James will be used again somewhat.
    • There are a handful of verses which are quoted much more frequently than any other. They are readily used as triggers to inculcate certain doctrines and guidelines. However, looking at the context of the verse, their application in the literature of the organization is often questionable.
    • There are very many texts which are only used in the Commentary on the Letter of James or w97 15.11. or at most a few more times. And that in over 75 years! Quite a number of them contain thoughts which do not really fit to teachings of the Governing Body. Or is it perhaps the other way around?
    • That the Commentary on the Letter of James is no longer available probably has another reason. Since its author Edward Dunlop was disfellowshipped for dissenting views on some doctrines as an ‚apostate‘ around 1980 is one. Printed books, however, have always continued to be sold by the organization in the field service because of the cost, even when the content was outdated. But another reason seems to be that the Commentary on the Letter of James adheres to the Bible book of James and not to the teachings of the organization. For example, on many verses it adheres to the Bible and not the teaching of ‚anointed ones‘ and ‚other sheep‘ with a different hope. On this and other points, the book is just too uncomfortable and might make some preachers think twice.
    • If for this reason already very many verses are practically not used in the literature of the organization, then one hardly wants to do this with a book like the Commentary on the Letter of James.

The Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses Makes a Book Disappear – Part 1

    By Christian

Most Kingdom Halls of Jehovah’s Witnesses and many Witnesses have them: a ‚theocratic‘ library. That is, a collection of previously published books and editions of the Watchtower and Awake. One book I liked very much and also found again in the estate of my late mother:

Commentary on the Letter of James, published in 1979 by the Watchtower Society.

But actually it is a lost book. In what way? Because unfortunately even many Jehovah’s Witnesses don’t know this book published in 1979 at all anymore! Well, it is older, but it should be easy to find in the Watchtower online library …

    Watchtower Online Library Books

So in the list of books it is already once not. But we know the title. So let’s look in the index:

Watchtower Online Library Index – Book James

There are several references to a book with abbreviation cj, which can be easily interpreted as ‚Commentary James‘. But there is no link to the book. When I searched again in May 2023, I got this result. With ‚commentary on the letter of james“:

With ‚commentary james‘, we get this:

However, of the 22 results, all but 8 are in ‚Kingdom Ministry‘, which prove that this book was sold in the preaching service, for example in km 8/89 for $1.00. By the way, in Germany in the ‚Kingdom Ministry‘ December 1987 it was still stated to offer the book for DM 1.00. Only one month later, in January 1988, the ‚Kingdom Ministry‘ stated that the book could be offered for DM 2.00. So the value had doubled!

Commentary on the Letter of James sold for $1.00

Leaving out the references in the index and references in the Watchtower and Awake to the book, these results remain:

    Wachtturm Online-Bibliothek Suche

No reference to the book except these? And nothing from the content of the book can be found. Maybe the ‚question from readers‘ is interesting:

    w81 1/15 p.31 Questions From Readers

Nothing, except an article that tries to ’straighten out‘ one sentence from the whole book. What is supposed to be so special about this one sentence?

I still remember how all Jehovah’s Witnesses worldwide studied this book in ‚Book Study‘ meeting. The next picture, however, does not show my book, in which, of course, I also diligently underlined. The book is from my late mother, whom I can praise posthumously: She too had prepared well and underlined exactly the right answer to the question on Section 27:

    Kommentar zum Jakobusbrief S. 49
Commentary on the Letter of James (German) p. 49
Commentary on the Letter of James (English) p. 47/48

And in the ‚Watchtower Online Library‘ there is nothing, except an article that tries to ’straighten out‘ this one sentence from the whole book. What should be so special about this one sentence?

„Besides being the God of Christians, Jehovah is also their Father, for he has begotten them by means of his spirit to be his sons.“

Commentary on the Letter of James (English) p. 47

The further text of the Watchtower article shows what explosive power this one, small sentence probably had:

Does this mean that all dedicated and baptized Christians have been begotten by God’s holy spirit to be his sons?

No, this is not the thought that should be gathered from this, as though we now had a change of understanding in this matter. Such a change would nullify the Scriptural teaching as to two separate destinies for those gaining salvation, a heavenly one and an earthly one.

    Watchtower 1981 15/1 p. 31 Questions from Readers

And there even a tiny change is proposed, which would have ‚fixed‘ everything:

To avoid ambiguity, the Commentary could have inserted the word “anointed” in this sentence on the bottom of page 47. Thus it could have read: “Besides being the God of anointed Christians, Jehovah is also their Father, for he has begotten them by means of his spirit to be his sons.” Then the question on page 57 on this portion could have read: “How is God also the Father of anointed Christians?”

    Watchtower 1981 15/1 p. 31 Questions from Readers

On the subject of ‚anointed Christians,‘ I address this article, „Should We (Be) Called Christians or Anointed?“ (to be translated to English yet)

Also, the old Ezekiel book from 1971 (Know Jehovah kj) is still available online, as is the new Ezekiel book from 2018 (Pure Worship rr). In the German index, they are even right next to each other!

Is the reason for the disappearance of the book of James perhaps that there have been too many changes? Why then was the book of Ezekiel rewritten after almost 50 years? I quote from the 2018 book:

Additionally, in the decades since 1971, our understanding of many Bible truths has been greatly enhanced as the light has continued to grow brighter. (Prov. 4:18) In 1985 we started to see clearly how the “other sheep” are declared righteous as friends of God. (John 10:16; Rom. 5:18; Jas. 2:23) Then in 1995 we understood for the first time that the final judging of “the sheep” and “the goats” would take place during the coming “great tribulation.” (Matt. 24:21; 25:31, 32) All these adjustments have had an impact on our understanding of the book of Ezekiel.
In recent years, the light has continued to grow brighter still. Consider the lessons learned from Jesus’ illustrations. Many of those lessons have now become crystal clear in our minds and hearts. A number of those illustrations refer to events that will soon take place during the fast-approaching great tribulation. In a similar way, our understanding of certain prophecies found in the book of Ezekiel has been clarified. Included among these are the prophecies concerning Gog of Magog (chapters 38 and 39), the work of the man with the secretary’s inkhorn (chapter 9), and the valley of dry bones and the symbolic joining of the two sticks (chapter 37). All these clarifications likewise update what was written years ago in the ‘Know Jehovah’ book.

Pure Worship 2018, Pure Worship of Jehovah—Restored At Last! p. 2 chapter „A Letter From the Governing Body“

If you compare the two books, you can’t help but wonder what is left of the old book. So the Governing Body had decided to have a new interpretation of the Bible book Ezekiel written.

Why wasn’t this done with the book Commentary James as well? I can’t really remember anything from the book that would have been changed by ’new light‘.

The reason lies somewhere else. If you search for Edward Dunlap in the Watchtower library, you will still find him. Jehovah’s Witness sources still show that he had important functions in the Jehovah’s Witness organization:

Watchtower Library: Search result ‚Edward Dunlap‘

I remember finding even more about him there at one time. He was the registrar of the Gilead School for over 10 years and gave lectures at their graduation ceremonies. What you don’t find is that he was the author of the book Commentary on the Letter of James. That is found in Raymound Franz’s book Conflict of Conscience. And there you find the reason for it all: around 1980 he was branded and excluded with others in an incredibly un-Christian way as an ‚apostate‘. And any memory of him should probably be erased. Much like what is happening now with Anthony Morris III on Jehovah’s Witness websites since he is no longer a member of the Governing Body. But that is another topic.

However, it is difficult to understand why the book is then also banned from the online library. Because before such a book is published by Jehovah’s Witnesses at an assembly in large numbers and is later also studied in the ‚book study‘ meeting, it must have been proofread by very, very many. Also by the Governing Body and its committees. And with the publication by the Governing Body, it was the ’new light‘ of the ‚current truth‘. Or was it not? Either the content is correct, or it is not. Otherwise, the Governing Body would have actively distributed false teachings as ’spiritual food‘.

Maybe there is still one or the other copy in the Kingdom Halls of Jehovah’s Witnesses or private libraries. For those who know English it is easier: You can still download the English edition of the book at watchtowerwayback.org.
